NORTHERN UNION GAME.

TERMS REFUSED

LONDON, September 10. The Northern Rugby Union has refused the New South Wales League’s terms for a visit to Australia and Now Zealand. September 10. A prominent official of the Northern Football Union declares that colonial leaguers are poor tacticians to make such a ridiculous offer as was done by New South Wales. It should be at least equal to the previous tour. LONDON, Septemaber 14.

The football season opened with fine prospects. There will be a larger number of “ thousand pound ” men than ever. Clubs are paying even more for first-class new talent.

NEW SOUTH WALES v. WANGANUI. WANGANUI, September 11. The league match between New South Wales and Wanganui to-day was spoilt by rain, three days’ fine weather having been broken by a deluge. The ground was a quagmire. New South Wales won by 44 points to 9, but the game would have probably been more one sided had the conditions been more favourable. The spectators numbered about 2000. NEW SOUTH WALES v. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, September 13. The New South Walts League team met Wellington on a fine day and good ground. The visitors proved superior to Wellington, their back play being a lot better. Fast passing rushes were the order of the day. The passing and the taking of the ball by the visitors was really good. The match resulted in a win for the visitors by 34 points to 18. At one stage New ooufch Wales led by 26 noints to nil. but Wellington scored freely towards the finish. For the winners Horder scored three tries, Frawley two, Craig two, and S. Dean one. Frawley converted three of them, and also kicked two goals from free kicks. For Wellington House scored two tries, and Spencer and Bensman one each, three of them being converted by Strickland.

HAWKft’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY. NAPIER, September 14. The match Hawke’s Bay v. Poverty Bay, which was played on Saturday in the presence of 1500 spectators, resulted as follows: —Hawke’s Bay, 34 points; Poverty Bay, 8 points.
