ATTEMPTED IUICTDES.

A man named Robert Nicol, aged about 25 years, made a determined attempt to commit suicide on the St. Kilda Beach about 4 p.m. on the 10th inst. It appears that Nicol, who is a. fireman, and has worked on a number of liie intercolonial steamers, first entered the water, but came out again. Look a razor from his pocket, and cut his throat. He then put the razor back in his pocket, and continued walking about. Information as to what had occurred was sent to the South Dunedin Police Station, per telephone, by a youth named George Edwards, and Constables Grigg and Howard speedily arrived on the seen© and conveyed Nicol to Dr Linden’s, where his injury was attended to. He was then taken to the Hospital. Nicol, who is apparently a stranger to Dunedin, had evidently been on a heavy drinking bout.

AUCKLAND, September 10.

A man named John Duff, 29 years of age, a recent arrival from Taumarunui, at present lies in the Auckland Hospital i-n a critical state of health, suffering from the effects of poison. Duff arrived at the Salvation Army Workmen’s Home yesterday afternoon and booked a room, for which he paid in advance. He was somewhat strange in his manner, but there was nothin? about bim to suggest that he would attempt his life. After going to his room upon his arrival he subsequently went out, and returned to tea. He retired to his room not long after the mealOne of the officers had his attention called to the room by a noise, and upon going in Hound the man evidently suffering. When it was discovered that Duff had taken poison he was at once conveyed to the hospital. His condition is critical.
