COM l» El 111031 S SOCIE rV. ' FINAL DEMONSTRATION CONCERT. The third and final" demonstration concert ■was given at Hie Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday evening by the successful conpetitore at the recent competitions. The spacious theatre was tilled to its utmost capacity, both upstairs and downstairs, by an audience which manifested keen appreciation of the concert. The performers certainly had no reason to complain of the manner in which their efforts were received, all the items being warmly applauded. 'I he work of all those who contributed reached a" high standard. Mr R. A. Ewing, a vice-preeidont of the society, occupied the chair, and in the course of hi* introductory remarks said the committee considered that the recent festival had been a most successful one. Subscribers would be- pleased to know that the finances were also satisfactory. A pleasing feature of this year’s competitions had been the increased attendances during the day at the preliminary tests. These iiad been larger thaji on any previous occasion. The committee desired to express its thunks to the official accompanist, Mrs Montague, who hud had a most strenuous time and had given complete satisfaction to both competitors and judges; to the stage manager, Mr Towsey, tor the excellent way he had controlled matters behind the scenes; and also to the secretary, Mr Wilson, to whoso organising capacity the smooth running of the competitors was largely due.—(Applause.) The programme comprised 28 items, only one of which was struck out.
Mr T. E. Sedgwick, /well known in connection with the (joys’ immigration scheme, was recently appointed by the New South Wales Government aa superintendent in charge of a party of British lads leaving England on July 29. for New South Wales. Ho expressed his intention of spending two or three months in Australia, and then coming on to New Zealand. Should he carry out his plan he ehoultT reach Now Zealand about Christmas time.
