During the visit of a detachment of Ilawera school children to 11.M.5. New Zealand on Friday afternoon, Mr C. A. Strack took occasion to present Captain Halsey with a cannon ball which has some history attached to it. The ball, states Mr Strack, was used by the gunship Alligator when she bombarded a Maori pa on the Taranaki coast. Early settlers will remember the time when tlio whaler Harriot, in charge of Captain Guard, was wrecked on the Taranaki coast, and some of the crew wore murdered by the Maoris. The Alligator was despatched to make reprisals. In thanking Mr Strack, Captain Halsey stated that he would keep the old cannon ball with many other curios which he had already received.
