“ I should like to have our hospital run The spelling of the name “Wanganui” was the subjects of a few remarks by Mr W. Kerr, S.M., at the Assessment Court at Wanganui on Saturday. There was 10 question, ho said, that the word should he spelt “ Whanganui.” which meant a haven, or harbour. Etymologically this was correct. < and it was far more euphonious than I'ho* style now largely in use. It was a great pity, ho said, that the original way should not bo retained, and he was sorry that the newspapers and the Native Department had dropped the “h.” There was no more reason, he concluded, why the “ h ” Should be dropped in spelling the name of this town than it should bo in spelling the •word “ where,” and ho considered that the word “Wanganui” was only the outcome of slovenliness.
