Have you ever heard of a mare carrying a foal so long? —Answer: The average period is about 840 days, but that period may vary with individual mares and with breeds, with the sex of the offspring, the age of the dam, and her strength and condition. Some mares carry their young for an abnormal period, either shorter or longer, and the habit may become characteristic of them. Cases such as yours have l>een chronicled from time to time.
