SNAILS AS A CURE FOR CONSUMPTION.

An advertisement appeared in Thursday’s Auckland Star, asking for “Seven dozen box snails.” Next morning a reporter sought out the advertiser, and inquired for what purpose the snails were needed. He was met with the rather startling explanation that the snails were required as food for a sick -girl. Further inquiry elicited the information that a snail diet is regarded by some people as something of a panacea with special consumption curing powers. Mr W. S. Malaquin, who is well known in Christchurch, told a Press reporter on Tuesday that he had read with interest a paragraph stating that in Auckland the friends of a sick girl had advertised for snails, believing that they would aid Junto recovery. Mr Malaquin says that in his native district of Orleans snails were prescribed for his sister, who was consumptive. She was ordered to take the small ones which crawl upon the vines, pick them from their shells, and oat them alive. She did so, and was cured. The prescription is not an unusual one in France, and is often most successful. In the case of hid own children here in New Zealand, he has cured bad colds by means of a syrup made from snails, and if anyone should wish to know how to make the syrup, ho will be pleased to tell them.

There are very nearly 100 men on rho pay sheet of the Taurnanimii railway station. This (says the local paper) is a little colony in itself, when wives and children are included. The average daily attendance at the Car-. negie Public Library last week was 675 persons. Facsimiles of the first four folios of Shakespeare will be shown in the Reference Department this week.
