THE GAELIC SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of the Gaelic Society was hold at the Excelsior Hotel on tha 15th. The Chief (Mr Dugald M'Phcrson) occupied the chair, and there was a large and enthusiastic attendance
The annual report stated that the society had mado splendid progress during tha year. The membership had increased beyond expectation. Last year there were 53 members—23 ladies and 35 gentlemen. This year the members number 124—45 ladies and 79 gentlemen, an increase of 66 members, so that the society had more than doubled itself. Much of this success was duo to tha influence of the members of the committee. Chieftain Roderick Mackenzie had been energetically working in his own quiet way. and it was through his efforts and those of Mr Hugh MTvinnon and a few other members of the committee that the society wm in such a successful position. The mcetingt were very well attended, and the committoa met regularly each month to transact tha business of tile society. At the exhibition of the Baillio collection of pictures there was one called “ The Brig o’ Doon,” which the Scottish societies of Dunedin decided to purchase. ’The Gaelic Society’s proportion towards the cost was £lO 10s, and this amount the committee instantly subscribed, without interfering with the society’s funds. The financial position of tho society waa gratifying. The year commenced with a credit balance of £139 14s 3d, and finished with a balance of £l6l 5s Bd, including interest to 31st March last on £125 deposited in tho Bank of New Zealand; £8 was transferred from the current account to tha deposit account. —Tho adoption of tho report was moved by tho Chief, seconded by Mr T.
