HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors, held on the 17th, was attended by the Hon. T. Fergus (chairman), Messrs J. M. Galliaway, G. C. Israel, J. Wilson, T. K. Sidey, M.P., and W. Downie Stewart. Tho Works Committee recommended that a rector’s residence, tho contract price for which is not to exceed £1750, be proceeded with on the site of existing residence; that the erection of a hall at the girls’ school bo also undertaken (contract estimated at £1400) ; and that the Mayor be asked to allow Mr Tannock to report on the grounds at the Boys’ High School. —The report was adopted. It was resolved that section 134, block IT, Oamaru, be offered for lease by auction, with valuation for improvements. An application from Mr Foddie for a renewal of the lease was declined. It was decided to pay a visit to the schools on tho 23rd inst.

An application was received from Mr P. C. Hjorring, on behalf of T. M'Grail, for permission to transfer his lease of section 23, block XIII, Oamaru town, to Patrick Martin.—Approved on the usual terms.

On the motion of Mr Gallaway, seconded by M,r Sidey, it was resolved—“ The board desires to record its appreciative sympathy with the efforts being made by the Otago Boys’ High School Jubilee Association to celebrate the jubilee of the opening of tho Otago Boys’ High School, and to express the hope that the rector and staff will cordially co-operate with tho association to make the celebrations worthy of the occasion, and urges upon the present scholars that every boy should join the association and thereby help to make tho jubilee a historical event. Further, that a copy of this resolution bo forwarded to the rector and each member of the staff and to the secretary of the association.”

The rector of the Boys’ School reported that the number of boys at present on the roll was 332, of which total 110 were seniors, 197 juniors, and 25 paying pupils. The total was the same at the corresponding period last year. The principal of the Girls’ High School reported that the roll number in April was 195 —189 free pupils and six who paid fees.
