(From Our Own Correspondent.) 0 AMARU, April 19. A smaller amount of business in sheep has been recorded' this week. Good young breeding ewes and forward lambs command the greatest amount of attention, but these are not offering in proportion to the demand. At the weekly sale there was a good yarding of sheep. Two-tooth owes realised from 17s to 18s 6u ; two. four, and sixtooth cu es, from 16s to 19s 6d; and four and six-tooth ewes, from 17s to 19s 6d. Privately, good linos of four-tooth ewes have been sold at 225; two, four, and sixtooth ewes, at 18s; eight-tooth ewes, at 17s 6d; and sound-mouthed ewes, at from 15s 6d to 17s 6d. Forward iambs have been placed readily at anything from los 6d up to 15s, according to size and quality. A fair number of fat lambs arc still coming forward, and for these prices range from 17s to 18s for good freezers, while 19s was given for a special lino. Store cattle continue in request, forward bullocks, suitable for putting on turnips, being particularly wanted and bard to got. A little business has been done, mostly in young animals. Present quotations are: Throe to five-year-old bullocks, from £6 10s to £7 10s; two to two and a-balf-yoar-old steers. £4 to £5; eighteen months’ steers and heifers, £2 to £2 10-s; yearlings, 25s to 30s. Dairy cattle continue to find buyers at rates on a par with last week’s quotations. I SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, April 19. Business in all classes of stock has continued to be pretty fair during the past week, excepting store sheep, which suffered a fairly big decline at the Winton Sale on Thursday. This sale is one of the principal sales in the Southland District, and is usually taken as a fair criterion of the ruling value of sheep. The entry in the yards must have been slightly over 10,000, and some really fine sheep were yarded, and as the day was a beautifully fine one the • attendance of farmers and graziers was large. Considering that it was a special sale, however, bidding was very slack right from the start, and, taken all round, prices must have showed a decline of fully Is 6d per head, and in some cases of good lambs the decline was even more marked, as much as 2s per head loss being obtained f--r them at this -sale than was ruling a fortnight ago at the regular sale. However, as reported last week, the sale held a fortnight ago was generally looked upon as above the average, and even with the lower prices obtainable now it must still be admitted that store sheep are selling very well indeed in all parts of this province. The business doing in fat stock during the past week has been rather limited, both in fat cattle and fat sheep Butchers are now inclined to make their purchases in the yards, and do not seem so keen to go into the country as has been the case for a considerable time past. There appears to be a fair amount of fat stock about, and the yardings for quite a number of sales have been fairly large. There is no difference in the value of store cattle, and in this section business is practically dead The only class being turned over in store cattle are tlirce-and-a-half-year-old forward bullocks. There are a few buyers for this class to go straight on to the turnips, but purchasers are not keen to give big values, as is the case usually at this time of the year. A little business has been done in rams. The inquiry, however, is not so large as formerly, and. as the supply is not so groat as in former years, prices for rams have held firm. The following are the ruling quotations: —Fat cattle ; Prime bullocks, beef, 30s to 31s: unfinished, 28s to 295; prime heifer beef, 27s to 28s: unfinished, 25s to 25s 6cl; cow beef, 22s to 235: and old, down to 20s. Fat sheep : Prime heavy butchers’ wethers, 19s 6d to 20s 6d ; lighter. 18s to 18s 6d ; extra prime heavy ewes, 18s to 18s 6d ; prime, 17s 6d to IBs’; lighter, 15s 6d to ICs; butchers’ lambs, 17s 6d to 18s. In fat lambs the market shows a slight improvement, and to-day’s values arc sjjd for up to 42’s, and s|cl for seconds and overs. The quantity of this class of stock is by no means large, and the cold, wet weather experienced during the last week or two will assuredly cause a set-hack among those coming on the market for the next month or so. Store cattle: Good fresh big bullocks for turnips. £6 15s to £7 18s; two-and-a-half-ycar-olds, £5 to £5 10s; two-year-olds,'£4 10s to £4 15s; eighteen months, £3 10s to £3 15s; yearlings, £2 10s .to £2 15s. Store sheep: Two-tooth owes, 18s to 18s 6d: fdur-tooths, 18s 6d to 19s 6d; sixtootlis, 17s 6d to 18sfour-year-old paddock ewes. 15s to 15s" 6d; tussock owes, 14s 6d to 15s; ewe lambs, extra good. 14s to 15s; mixed sex lambs for rape, 13s to 13s 6d ; fat lambs. 12s to 12s 6(1 : twotooth wethers, 15s 6d to 16s 6d; four and “’ v : tooths, 160 to 17s.
ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, April 16. At Addington there was again a largo entry of all classes of sheep, and good entries in other departments. Fat cattle showed a decline of 2s per lOOib. Easily the largest entry of store sheep during the current season came forward The demand for ewes, particularly for any lines from two tooth to fair-mouth, was noticeably keen, values being very firm at a slight advance on recent rates. The quotations are ; Ewes —two-tooth (small), 15s 6d to '6s; four-tooth (small), to 16s 6d; two, four, six, and eight-tooth, 14s 6d to 18s; four, six. and eight-tooth, 15s 6d to 15s 6d; four and six-tooth, to 16s 6d; six and eight-tooth. 12s 6d to 18s 3d; good sound-mouth sorts, 15s 6d to 17s 6d; medium sorts, 13s 6d to 14s 3d; inferior, to 12s 6d; full and failing-mouth, 11s to 13s 3d; aged. 7s 6d to 9s 9d; and inferior merinos, 4s 4d. There was an entry of 7100 fat lambs, of which a good proportion were very prime lambs, bur more light and unfinished lots than have been offered of Late. Prices were on the whole equal to those of last week, and averaged about 5Ad to s|d per lb Togs made 17s 6d to 21s 6d; extra, to 235; ordinary freezers. 15s 6d to 17s 9d; and light and unfinished, 14s 3d to 15s. The yarding of fat sheep totalled about 6000. and was again made up chiefly of owes. Exporters operated freely in both wethers and owes, and owing to the number of prime lines of the former being limited there was an improvement in prices. The range of prices was: Prime wethers, 19s 6d to 235; extra, to 245; lighter, 16s to 19s; merino wethers, 13s to 15s Id ; prime ewes, 16s 6d to 20s 9d: medium, 14s to 16s; aged and light, 10s 5d to 13s 6d; merino owes, 10s lOd. The entry of fat cattle totalled 370. Beef made 21s to 29s per 100 lb, according to quality. Steers realised £7 16s to £11; extra, to £ls 10s; heifers, £6 to £lO 17s 5d and £5 2s 6d to £9 ss. Prices for veal calves ranged from Ss to £3 Bs, according to quality.
A fair number of store cattle came forward. Fifteen to 18 months sorts realised £3 3s to £3 17s fed; two-year steers, £5 8s to £5 11s; steers, £6 7s fed; threeyear steel's. £7 16s to £7 17s (the latter being passed) ; and cows, £1 10s to £4 15s. Dairy cows are again in keen demand, prices ranging from £4 10s to £lO ss.
The yarding of fat pigs was a largo one, and North Island competition was largely responsible for the briskness of the sale. Choppers realised £3 to £4 10s, and heavy baeonors £3 7s fed to £3 14s fed, these prices being equivalent to 5d per lb. Lighter baconers made £1 5s to £3 5s —equal to sgd per lb. Heavy porkers brought £2 5s to £2 10s, and lighter descriptions, £1 IBs to £2 2s fed —equal to 6cl to 6id per !b A good yarding of store pigs met with a slack demand The best class realised £1 10s to £1 15s; medium, £1 6s to £1 9s; and small sorts, 18? to £1 ss. Wcaners wore a 1 so in poor request, and prices ranged from 7s to 10s. LIVE STOCK AIARKET Burnside, Wednesday, April 16. Fat Cattle. —240 head yarded.
