Much interest is being evidenced on the West Coast in the inquiry being held at Reefton into the fire which caused the destruction of five racehorses on the morning of Boxing Day. Some interesting evidence was elicited in the course of to-day’s proceedings. William Shields stated that ho was a draughtsman residing at Palmerston North, and leased the racehorse Comedian from a Mr Rutledge, of that town. His horse was placed in M‘Mahon’s stables, and was one of those destroyed. If, he added, a man named Riley stated that he was interested in the horse, it was absolutely incorrect. When he (witness) left the stable the night before the occurrence everything appeared quite safe. Frank Laurie, a miner working at Big River, stated that Riley and himself were boarding at Gamble’s Coronation Hotel. They were together up to 3 a.m. of the 27th. Riley stated that he was part-owner of a horse called Comedian, which was stabled at Powley’s stables. At 3 o’clock Riley went to have a look at the horse, but came back and said the horse was not there. Both of them slept at Gladstone Hotel in one bed. Neither of them heard the firebell, and did not know of the fire till 8 o’clock in the morning. Riley seemed greatly concerned when he found out that Comedian was burned. From the manner of his speaking to witness he arrived at the conclusion that Riley’s brother was the owner of the horse Comedian.

Francis O’Donnell, a boarder at Gamble’s Coronation Hotel, said that on the night of the fire lie was assisting the Licensee. He overheard a conversation between Riley and Gamble offering to sell Gamble the racehorse Comedian, the reason being that his brother, who resided in Christchurch, had bought two more horses. Laurie and Riley were shown their bedrooms in the Coronation Hotel at 2 o’clock, but left immediately, going out by a back gate at 20 minutes to 4 in company. Mrs Gamble let three men out of the "door of the hotel. He then saw no sign of smoke or fire, although the hotel was situated less than 50 yards from the other hotel. About 20 minutes afterwards, when in the back yard, he heard a series of blows resembling horses kicking. Looking up lie saw smoke issuing from the stables.

Other witnesses testified that everything was in order when the stables were left, and that the cause of the outbreak was a complete mystery. The Inspector stated that from the fresh developments at tlie inquest he considered it necessary to ask for a further -adjournment to have those persons mentioned present to give evidence. The inquiry was accordingly adjourned til! Wednesday, the 15th.
