IMPORTATIONS OF HOLSTEIN CATTLE FROM HIGH REGISTER COWS.
Holstein importations are becoming more frequent, several large shipments having ci*mo to hand lately in the North Islam!. Recently particulars of the Government's purchases made by Mr Singleton in the United Suites wore given. Coming by the same steamer with those is a lot of four heifers and a young bull consigned to O'uny Farm, Plimmerton, near Wellington. These were purchased from the celebrated farm of Woodcrcst, in the New York State. The bull Woodcrcst Hcngcrveld Meohthildc —a handsome individual, more white than black ■‘-is sired by Pietjo 22nd’s Son, the dam being Nannc Hcngcrveld de Kol, a young cow which last vear. notwithstanding an accident, gave 18,5471 b of milk and 8C9.61b of butter. The ball’s grandsire is Homestead Girl de Kol Sarcastic Cad, who has 90 daughters ami 11 sons with advanced official records. The granddam Pietje 22nd is on all sides admitted to have boon the greatest cow impotlcd into America. She gave 31.62ib of butter in seven days, I 128.4-lb in 30 days, and 666.6!h of butter i from 13,6731 b of milk in six months. The heifers, four in number, are: Woodcrest Pietje Kate. Angie Netherland Leni nox. Pietje Woodcrcst Vernon, and Pietje Woodcrcst Douwe. The first-named is a show animal of fine conformation, sired by Pietjt 22nd’s Woodcrest Lad. a young sire who already has 25 A.R.O. (official advanced register) daughters and four A.R.O. sons to his credit; amongst the daugthers being the Junior four-year-old | World’s Champion Fairmont Regis Pietje, | who gave 35.611 b o f butter in seven davs. i The grandsire is Homestead Girl de Kol Sarcastic 1 wa<i. previously referred to. The dam of the heifer is Woodcrcst Lady Kate, who, as a two-year-old, iravo over 191 b of butter in seven days. This year she has been entered for the semiofficial yearly test, and will, barring accidents, mako a
gcod record. The granddam, Pleasant Valley Kate 2nd. a first-prize cow in both Eastern and Western States, Iras three A.R.O. daughters and four A.R.O. sons, and gave BVib of butter in 30 days, while the great-granddam, Pleasant A’alley Kate, who has four-A.R.O. daughters and two A.R.O. sons, gave over 1001 b of butter in the same time. The sire of No. 2 heifer is Rifton Lassie Lad, a son of Homestead Girl de Kol Sarcastic Lad, and a full brother to the world’s champion two-your-pkl Woodcrest Rifton Lassie, who, during the..last 12 months, as a two-year-old gave 19,5611 bof milk and 908.31 bof butter. Another daughter of the sire of this heifer stands second on the world’s list of two-year-olds for yearly production. The dam is Aagie Hartgog Netherland, who traces back to Artis, Clothilde, and Milla’s Pieterje Netherland, all great record foundation Holsbeins. No. 3 heifer, Pietje Woodcrest Vernon, is sired by Cornucopia Pietje Lad out of the dam Clothilde Vernon de Kol, who, as a two-yea’r-old, gave 16.651 b of butter in seven days and 69.651 b in 30 days, and who is a granddaughter of Ixnd Netherland de Kol, who has more A.R.O. daughters than any other sire with one exception.. The granddam is Neah Pauline de Kol, a 261 b cow, and whose sire was full brother to the world’s record cow of her time, Aagie Cornucopia Pauline. fourth heifer is by the same sire as No. 3, the dam, who was imported from Friesland, being Douwe Pieter, who when only two years and eight days gave 3161 b of milk and 121 b of butter in seven days. The grandsire, Pietje 22nd’s Woodcrest Lad, who has 25 A.R.O. daughters and four A.R.O. sons, is sire to the world’s record Junior four-year-old Fairmont Zerma Segis Pietje, who made 35.611 h of butter in seven days.
Three of the heifers are bred to King Walker, a bull of great prepotency. So far there is none of the Walker family in New Zealand. The dam of King Walker is Lilian Walker Pieterje, whose 30-day record is-125.31b0f butter, while Ruby Walker, her daughter, has 1001 b to her credit in the same time. Her dam Beauty Pieterje’s record for seven days is 30.5ib. Her granddam, the famous cow Prilly, at the age of 13 years made a record of 25.21 b of butter, which is equal to at least 301 b for a cow in her prime. She has undoubtedly proved herself one of the greatest transmitting cows, through her daughters, of the breed, having produced six A.R.O. daughters as well as two 4.R.0. sons—and a line of succession of 301 b cows for four generations. Her record, with those of her daughter, granddaughter, great granddaughter, and great _ great granddaughter’s makes a world s record for five generations. She a.so with, her daughter holds the world’s record for dam and six daughters for milk, butter, and percentage of fat. The other hei f er, Woodcrest Pietje Ivatc, is bred to Woodcrest Jo, a young bull of great breeding, so good that he has been purchased by the New* Zealand Government as one of the herd loaders at Wcraroa. Hie sire of this bull is Oolantha Johanna Champion, and the dam Pietje 22nd’s Daughter, a young cow now in the semiofficial year’s tost, and promising to make a line record. The two granddams, Colantha 41 ii Johanna ai)d Pietje 22nd, are both long-time railkejs and \yorld’s record holders, the former having made a yearly record ot 27,432 b of milk and 12471 b of butter, besides breaking all records for one day, seven days, 30 days, and six months which were unbeaten for many years. The latter made a six months’ record with 13,6741 b of milk and 566.61 b of butter.
The average seven day butter production ?! ,i 1?, an d the two granddams is 31.131 b while the average production for tlie 10 females m the pedigree with records is 26.441 b.
The grandsires are Sir Favno Concordia and Homestead Girl do Kol Sarcastic Lad, the former having 12 A.R.O. daughters and 10 A.R.O sons, and the latter 90 A.R O daughters and 11 A.R.O. sons. These animals, which should make a va liable adition to the Holstoins in the Dominion, will arrive in Wellington about the middle of November.
