WELLINGTON, November 11. A salutary penalty was meted out by Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court to-day in the case in which Samuel Gray, carter, was charged with cruelty to a* horse by working it whilst it was lame.

Evidence was given by Constable Taylor that on October 23 lie saw defendant driving a cart down Revans street. The horse was practically being dragged behind. Afterwards he told Gray that the animal should not be worked, and he had it kept in a paddock for a night. The 'defendant said that a veterinary surgeon had seen Jthe horse previously, and had stated that it was all right. In the witness box Gray said that he had been working the horse on the morning of the 23rd and it suddenlj' developed lameness. He then proceeded to take it home.

His Worship said that he did not regard the defendant’s explanation as satisfactory. Gray had been before the court on a number of occasions for similar offences. He would be sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, without the option of a fine.
