RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

C.J.C. SPRING MEETING. GULDFINDER WINS) CANTERBURY CUP. Tiimb Dat— Wednesday, November 6. The Cup meeting was continued under most adverse; conditions. Rain started during early forenoon, and shortly after the racing commenced it fell heavily, almost without ceasing during the rest of the day. The track became very heavy, and the form in consequence was upset in several races. The quartet in the hurdles ran in fairly loose order over the first half-mile, and then Master Paul went away ami won well, although perhaps with not much Jto spare beyond his winning margin. Daylight Bill nearly unseated his rider at the mile post, and Golden Loop also lost ground at tho fence, but tho winner had too much pace and fenced too smartly for the opposition. Tho Hague and Jason were tho first to find their feet in the Spring Nursery Handicap. At the distance Jason took charge, and won by three parts of a length from Tho Hague, who boat Nightwatoh by clow on throe lengths. Immer was a good fourth, and Historietbe next. Mira was the first to break the line m tho Avon Welter, which was run in a heavy fall of rain. The grey, however, was quickly supplanted by Mount Victoria, who led up to the home turn from Pilgrim’s Way, Peary, and Scatondale. Troon was three length’s behind the last named horse as they ran to tho four-furlong post. Mira dropped back in the first quarter, and Mount Victoria faded out before reaching the straight, where Pilgrim’s Way took charge, and. keeping clear, won by a good length from Scatondale, who beat tho fast-finishing Troon by a long neck Bracken was close up next, just in front of Medallist The eouplrcl pair, Bon Ton and Lc.s Angelos, were made a strong order for the Canterbury Oup. Bobnkoff was showing the way as they came down the straight, and was joined by Bon Ton as they passed (he mile post, where Masterpiece, acting badly in the soft going, was hopelessly out of it, with Lady Lucv bringing up the rear. Los Angelos was making ground as they rounded the top turn. Bon Ton ami Bobrikoff carried on tho running to the straight, where Gold finder took charge, and, keeping clear of Domino in the last furlong. won nicely by two lengths. Bon Ton finished two lengths away third, BobrikotF fourth, and then in a bunch came Los Angelos, Masterpiece, and Vice-Admiral. Goldfmdor has improved with each race at tho meeting, and his performance to-day stamps tho son of San Fran as a fairly

Bound stayer. Los Angelo? lost a good deal of ground at the start through beginning slowly, and had to make up a good deal of ground to get near the leaders. Half a mile from home the conditions were all in favour of Bon Ton. who failed after going two miles. Bobrikoff ran fairly well for about two miles, but finally finished close on 20 lengths away from the placed horses. Obligant bolted" three furlongs from a break -aw ay in the Jockey dub Handicap, and was badly left in the actual start. Sea Kin<* at once took charge, and led along the 3»ck from My Lawyer and Haskayne, while Autumnus was lying fourth at half a mile. Sea King and Haskayne wore about three lengths in front of My Lawyer as they ran into the straight. Inside tho distance Haskayne had Sea King’s measure, and, going on, won nicely by a short length. Odessa made up a good deal o f ground in the last half-mile, and finished over a length away third, and then cam© My Lawyer, close up. The Cornet, Peirene and Peg soon became prominent in tho Randolph Handicap, and had May Dalrymple and Lockwood next as they ran to tho distance. In the run home Beg won by half a length from May Dalrymple. who beat Lockwood by close on two lengths. Then in close order came Distinction, Dan Cameron, and Gold Cup. Mumura took charge of the field in the Otaia Plato as they turned into the back straight, and led until four furlongs from home, where Ngatimaru took charge and landed in the straight with a commanding lead. At the distance, however, Ceylon came, full of running, and won very comfortably. Mumura came on again under punishment in the last half furlong, and out Ngatimaru out of second place. A strong fancy in Brown Trout put up a poor display. and Martime ran badly and finished last

The totalisator investments for the day totalled £30,294. -Tho following are the results:

The latter then made a good attempt to overhaul the leader, who easily held his own and won by three lengths, with Aema 10 lengths away third. Rounding the top turn Ngatimaru took charge, but in the straight was challenged by Ceylon, who won by two lengths. Time, 2min 45 3-sseo. Fourth Dat —Saturday, November 9. Tho Canterbury Jockey Club's unlucky star was in the ascendant to-day, and heavy rain spoilt the conclusion of the meeting. When tho field settled down in the Hurdles Beacon took charge, and showed the way into tho back stretch to Master Paul and Merocdo. Beacon was running in front of Mercedo, and Golden Loop moved up third as they entered the straight. Approaching tho last fence the trio were in line, and all under pressure. Mercedo toppled over, and in tho run home Golden Loop outstayed Beacon, and won by two lengths. Gold Bin was tided, about a dozen lengths away, just beating Gold Bird for a place. Styx and Peg appeared to be smartest out in tho Cressy Welter, and on reaching the homo rails were joined by Query and Crown Pearl. Inside the distance, Kilts ranged alongside the leaders, and Teviotdale also put in a claim. A good finish saw Kilts score by a short head from Tcviotdalc, with Countermine half a length away. Then in close order came Crown Pearl, Salzburg, and Gold Cup. Thrax, Hcsione, and Kilmeny were the first to become prominent in the Seymour Handicap. Before going three furlongs Trireme was pulled up owing to his saddle slipping. Once in tho straight Kilmeny came clean away, and won by four lengths from Lockwood, who boat Canute by a length. Then came Editah, Unieraboy, and Black Lupin. Bootle was shut out at the start for tho Members’ Handicap, in which Sea King got well out, and was leading Culprit by four lengths as they ran past tho fourfurlong post, where Pilgrim’s Way got shut out when running in a bunch behind Culprit. At the distance My Lawyer came through, and going on, won by a length and a-ha!f from Heathorbrae. Sea King finished third three lengths away, and then came Obhgant and Merry Frank. Bonny Helen was a strong order for tho Pioneer Handicap, but began badly. Solbano soon took charge, and won by a length from Whizz, who beat Cherubini by a long neck Bradamante and Sartovna were almost in line with the third horse. Haskayne and Bobrikoff were a shade slow in moving off in the Gold Cup. Bon Rove raced to the front, and shrotly after turning into the back stretch was joined by Haskayne, with tho others close up. The field ran in close order along the back, and approaching the far turn Bobrikoff moved up on tho outside, but, evidently in order to avoid covering too much ground, was taken back last on the rails. At this stage Los Angelos was going strongly. Bon Rove and Haskayne continued in the van to tho home turn, whore the latter was momentarily in tho lead, with Brown Owl close up. Bobrikoff ran close to the leaders as they straightened for home, but once inside tho distance Bon Rove ajad Bon Ton came away, and fiirhting out a strldo-for-stride finish, the stable companions appeared to register a dead heat, winning honours going to the unbeaten Bon Revo by the narrowest of margins. Bobrikoff had tho bad luck of the race, and made a run round tho outside of the field as the horses came from the four-furlong post to tho home turn. Brown Owl ran a good race, end finished two lengths away, and Los Angelos and Haskayne were uq.

with Bobrikoff. last. The winner received an ovation on returning to scale. Ventura, on her Australian and brilliant form in the Juvenile Plate, was a strong order for the Electric Plate. Naumai, "Ventura, and Peronilla were the first to hit the rails of the straight, but the lastnamed got shut out below the distance. In the last furlong Mowbray came with a good run, and, wearing down Ventura, boat her home. Tatterley was fairly close up, and then came Peronilla, Blue Lake, Glenowl, and Stepmaid in fairly close order. The meeting concluded with the Fendalton Handicap, in which backers were in rather a quandary, as they could not find a pronounced favourite. Medallist took up the running before reaching the back stretch, and Soldiers’ Chorus, who was always well placed, moved up as they rounded the top turn. Racing for homo, the order was Medallist, Soldiers’ Chorus, and True Knight. Below the distance Soldiers’ Chorus and Medallist appeared to have the finish between them, but in the last half-furlong Odessa swooped down on the loaders, and going on won by two lengths from Medallist Then in close order came Mira, Soldiers’ Chorus, and Mendip. A fancied horse in Ceylon was in a bad position throughout. Sandstrcam got a bad passage, and, after getting badly away from the barrier, could not improve his position.

The morning broke beautifully fine, but just before the second race there was a fairly heavy shower, and before the third race a fierce southerly squall sprang up, bringing with it rain and hail. In spite of the bad weather £39,782 was put through the tqtalisator, making £145,240 for the meeting, as against £137,583 at last year’s meeting. The seven days' racing during Carnival Week produced £243,417 in totalisator investments, averaging £54,773 per day. Results: —

Master Paul went to the front at the start, but after they crossed the first hurdle Beacon took charge, and as they went past Gutts’s he was leading from Master Paul, Mercedo, Gold Pin, and Golden Loop. Going towards the mile post there was little change in the order save that Daylight Bill ran into fourth place. At the six furlong post Beacon was a length clear of Mercedo, after whom came Daylight Bill, and Golden Loop. Rounding the top turn Mercedo ran to the front, and had a lead of half a length from Beacon as they came into the straight, with Golden Loop next Mercodo fell at the last fence, and Beacon went to the front, ibut in the last 100 yards Golden Loop passed him and won by two lengths. First Day—Wednesday, November 6. The annual fixture of the Winton Club opened under favourable weather conditions to-day, a large crowd attending from all parts of the province and many Otago centres, including Dunedin. The course was in capital order and fairly fast, and the racing was interesting, despite the fact that several of the most important events were somewhat easily won at the finish.. The honorary starter (Mr F. Wallis, of Gore) was successful with his despatches. The time-honoured Winton Gup, which was won by such good horses as Atlantic and Idalium (a brother to Sir Modred, who proved a successful sire in America) away back in the eighties, to-day fell to St. Aidon, trained by 11. Ellis at Wingatui. The old gelding improved on his Gore form of last week, and outstayed the opposition over the last furlong, although Miss Signal, a recruit from the hack class, unexpectedly showed a bold front in the latter stages of the race. The Winton Guineas Race, which was only re-established last season after an interval of a good many years, again fell to an enthusiastic breeder (Dr Robertson, of Tupanui), who scored with Pallant, a full brother to Palette. The Tapanui studmaster won the race last year with Palissude. These cups have been added to-the stakes during the past two seasons as the result of monetary contributions by local sportsmen wishing 'to encourage breeders and owners to support the only classic race in Southland. The second Horse, Giralda, is a lialf-brother to the Winton Cup winner Magdala. and third place was filled by St. Robona, a full-sister to Daringdalo, trained by J. Rutledge at Wingatui. Both trots were won by novice performers, bred and educated by Messrs Stevenson and M‘Math, of Riversdaie. who are rapidly coming to the fore as producers of light harness horses of more than average ability. When Vid lost his rider in the Trial Stakes the boy (H. M'Kernoy) hod one of his legs broken below the knee. Speculation was brisk, and £11,156 was passed through the totalizator, us against £8595 on the corresponding day of lost year. This return constituted an easy record for the club. Second Day—Thursday, November 7. The Wanton meeting was brought to a concusion to-day in bracing weather, accompanied with bright sunshine. A though tho attendance was not equal to that of bho opening deny it was very encouraging, and must have constituted a second day’s record. Tho racing was interesting enough, but tho fields were not what they should have been, particularly in the trotting races. This is explained by the fact that there was considerable grumbling in regard to the handicapping. No less than six of the races were won by horses that were successful on tho opening day, and six favourities and two second favourites were tho first to catch the judge’s eye. The principal event, again fell to St. Aidcn, ridden by J. Beale, and it «s interesting to note that the Dunedin horseman won no less than five times at the meeting. In the Farewell Handicap Nanda Devi’s saddle slipped, and his rider (R. Beckham) was heavily thrown, but escaped with a shaking. The Invercargill gelding Abo signalised his final appearance in the hack class by carrying off two races, making three wins for the meeting. As homvary starter Mr Wallis accomplished faV work. The WaPs-ctor record totalled £9075. as against or. the corresponding day of last vw and the total for the meeting was £20,231. as compared with £17.047 last year—an increase of £5184.
