SPORTING NOTES FROM AUSTRALIA.

B* RiVJKSWOKTB.

MELBOURNE, August 20. BENDIGO RACES. A two days' meeting was held at Bendigo last week, and was largely patronised by Melbourne racing men and horses. The leading event on the first day, the August Handicap, one mile, proved a good thing for the New Zealand-bred Ruapare 7.2, by Kilcheran—Moreze. Ruapare is owned by D. L. M'Rae, who trains at Horsham, an inland town of Victoria. Lato Hours 8.13 was a hot favourite for the race. Balmain and Kareela made tho pace, but Ruapare easily ran past them in tho straight, and won easily from Lato Hours. Ruapare evidently suffered no harm from his long bolt at Sandown Park, whore ho went three miles after a race before being pulled up. R. Harris, who rodo him in his Bendigo race, had previously ridden Activo Lass to victory in tho Homebush Flutter, six furlongs. The New Zealand Ngauruhoo 8.5 was a warm favourite for the Bendigo Plate, five furlongs; but he showed no dash at all, and missed a place, the winner turning up in Tairpian 8.5 (by Brakpan), a recent winner at Sandown Park. Gertie Mooro and Major White ran a dead-heat for the Hurdle Race. A. J. Bird, who was on Gertie Moore, subsequently rode The Bachelor, by St. Alwyne, to victory in tho Welter Handicap, seven furlongs. Fannio, by Famous, took the Bendigo Purse. With Ruaparo out of the way, Late Hours 9.0 easily won the Wilson Handicap, one mile, on the same day. He was ridden by Apologie'e Melbourne Cup pilot, W. Evans. Late Hours is by Ruenalf, and is trained by James Lynch at Flemington. H. J. Morgan, who rode Guncap to victory in th© Grand National Steeplechase, got home on Southerly 10.1, by Westerly, in the Steeplechase, in which J. P Edwards, a well-known Melbourne rider, sustained concussion of tho brain through Cooma falling with him. Gertie Moore 11.5 took tho Second Hurdle Race, Sunstar (whoso first appearance in the race it was) tho Trot, Pinnabah 8.3 tho Trial Handicap, and Brakespeare, by Amherst (imp.), the Jumpers' Flat Race. V.R.C. RACES. There was some exciting racing on Flemington last Saturday in connection with the V.R.C. August meeting. Two races were won by half a length, one by a long head, one by a head, and another by half a. head. The only tame finish was in the Steeplechase, which went to Leah Kleshna 11.7, who would probably have won the Australian Steeplechase tho previous Saturday but for getting rid of her rider at the second last obstacle. She is by tho Carbine horse Carbinier, and though owned by a bookmaker (Mr W. Hill), is very popular with the public. Her dam, Spieler, used to race over fences. There were four falls, but no damage was done. . It is usually over tho smaller fences that tho accidents with serious results take place. Tho horses do not go tho pace over the stiffer Flemington country that they do over Caulfield. J. Ryan, who rode Leah Kleshna, had previously got Domus 9.9 homo in the Hurdle Race, in which tho favourites. Lion and Fiddlestring, were unplaced. Domus is by the Bill of Portland horse, Eminence, and is owned by Mr J. H. Davis, who handicaps for some country clubs, and occasionally acts as stipendiary steward. . . The Ladies' Bracelet, run over six furlongs, brought out a good field. Golden Point 8.1 was returned tiio winner by half a length from Twa Brigs 6.7, and tho favourite Loru 9.7. Golden Point opened favourite, but passed right out at the finish of betting speculations. Golden Point is a full brother to Dunolly and was formerly owned by Mr C. L. Maedonald. He credited C. Cooper with his first winner since ho has been engaged in training, and also won his owner, Mr J. Meagher his first race. A high opinion was held ot Golden Point as a three-year-old, but he did not fulfil expectations, and Mr Meagher looked for some time to have made a very poor bargain when ho gave 1500 gs for him. The gelding must still owe him a good deal; but there is some probability of further races being won by him. Golden Point is engaged in the Ensom Handicap at 7.5, Metropolitan at 7.2, Caulfield Cup at 71, and Melbourne Cun at 6.13. The unlucky Riffian 7.5, had the services of C. Andrews in the August Handicap, and nearly succeeded in taking the race. Riffian stays well, but has not much brilliancy, and could not stave off defeat. Obi 8.11 only beat him by a long head. Neither horse is <Migacred in the Cups. Two Maltsters in Two Ales 7.9 and Avonwort 7.9 fought out the concluding stage of the Three and Four-year-old Handicap. The finish was exciting, and it was only bv half a head that Two Ales gained the day. The favourite. Count Traquair 8.3. showed plenty of pace, but failed to last the distance." He his not yet learnt to «tnv. There was another close finish in the Welter Handicap, one mile. Pnrhad 8.0. who is by Maltster's full brother, Maelgwyn, "■etting un on the last stride to win bv b head from' Atora 9.5. The winner is trained »t Caulfield by J. Havward.. who was formerly settled in West Australia. RACING IN QUEENSLAND. My Giovonni continues to show good form. On tho opening day of the Queensland T.G winter meeting My Giovonni won the National Plate, weight-for-ago. This performance was excelled last Wednesday, when the Buekmaster horse annexed the Metropolitan Handicap, of £IOOO, and carried the steadier of 10.3. Lettie, who finished second, was in rrceipt of 271 b. On the same occasion Simla, by Simmer (imp.) from Giril, won the Stand Plate Handicap. Oiril is a daughter of Carbine, and has produced several useful horse?. 7"he other winners during the day woro Linnelle (by Pctalite). Florrio Kent (by Fortunatus, imp.). Land Gem (by Lancaster), and Owen Rno (by Nonette). ' The meeting was concluded on Saturday

when the principal event, the Exhibition Handicap, of 150sovs, one mile and aquarter, went to an outsider in Go'ard 9.12, by Gova (imp.), after a good race with Owen Roe 7.7, who was only beaten a neck. My Giovanni won again, easily taking the weight-for-ago event, the Denman Plate, one mile. The other winners wore Dextrine (by Maltster), Pongo (by Roland), Royal Smoke (by Louis XIII), and Linnelle (by Petalite). RACING IN SYDNEY. There was another meeting at Rosehill last Saturday. Embracer, winner of the Maiden Plate, was imported from America. last year with the Wheatcroft shipment. He is by Woolsthorpe (an English-bred sire by Tibthorpe) from Embrace, by St. Blaise, and is the first of the American batch to win a race in New South Wales. The Hurdle Race went to Loughrea 11.5, by War God (son of Carbine), while the New Zealahder, Blue Mountain 10.4, was third. Hymenal 6.12 won in a big field the Dundas Handicap, seven furlongs, from Maltchester. The favourite, Woolerina 8.7, who is likely to do well during the spring, was close up. The Granville Stakes, ono mile, was won by Douda Esta 7.10, by Fucile (son of Carbine), who ,wae ridden by B. Deeley, and beat the favourite, Myrangle Maid 7.8, by half a length. Olive Green 6.11, by Seneschal, won the August Handicap, ono mile and three furjongs, with a little to spare from Matouree 8.7, while Havocorn 10.4, by Havoc, was successful in the Carlingford Mile (Bst minimum). RACING IN ADELAIDE. The Grand National meeting of the Adelaide Racing Club was commenced last Saturday. M. Whclan, who recently visited Melbourne with a team of jumpers, started three horses ,in the Grand National Hurdle Race—Hardrada 10.0, Common King 11.4 and Destinist 11.5, and he won with Hardradir; who ran a fair race in the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race, but subsequently shaped disappointingly in the Doutta Galla Hurdle Race. He had a nice weight in this company, and won easily. The top-weights, Bullawarra 12.10 and Yudnapinna 12.6, made no show, and neither did Common King, who finished a long- way in front of Hardrada in the Doutta Galla Hurdle Race. The winner is by Tostig (imp). Tho ancient Now Zealander, Waipuna 10.7, by Soult, was second. The Pistol filly Tadanga easily accounted for Doeside and the other starters in the Adelaide Guineas, and she evidently _ still retains her two-year-old form. She is in tho Caulfield Cup at 7.1 and Melbourne Cup at 6.12. J. Scobio, who has Doeside, also failed to scoro with Monodia in the Fulham Park Plate. She did not oven get a place, while A. Skirving's trio, The Miser, Charlatan, and Frccplay, ran unplaced in their races. It was not a lucky day for Victorians Tho first two-year-old event of the season, tho Fulham Park Plate, run at this meeting, went to a filly that was sold cheaply as a yearling. The winner, Rapine, is by the New Zealandbred Machine Gun (son of Hotchkiss) from Georgino (half-si6ter to the Epsom Handicap winner Maximize), by Flavus from Georgina, by Moorthorpe (imp.), and was knocked down at the Sydney sales last April to Mr J. M'Cann for 105ge. The other' winners were Persian Chief (by Persian Knight, imp.), Lockwing (by Harloch), Monte Malto (by Hymettus), and Sir Percivale (by Sir Tristram, imp.). RACING IN WEST AUSTRALIA.

Tho Kalgoorlio Racing Club's annual meeting was commenced l last Saturday, when the principal event, the Hannam Handicap, one mile, went to imported Lilyveil, who is by Martagon from Chiffon, and was purchased in England by Messrs Nicholas and Fox. Lilyveil carried 71b over weight. Andas rode three winnersr— Maori in the Spring Stakes, Lord Flavus in the Flying Handicap, and Lilyveil. Tho other winners were 'Whirligig, Footman, and Ordination. THE GAMING ACT. ALLEGED PUBLICATION OF BETTING. WELLINGTON, August 26. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Arthur Law, J. Cowan, and Dave Ross, for whom Mr M. Myers appeared, -were charged on separate counts with publishing betting notifications in July last. Sub-inspector Shehan conducted the case for the police. Detective-sergeant Cassells said that on July 12 he wrote a letter from the Railway Hotel, Lower Hutt. to A. Law asking him to post him a double card. He signed the letter "J, Morris, Railway. Hotel, Lower Hutt," and on July 16 he got a reply, a double card containing the entries for the Parliamentary Handicap, Winter Hurdles, and the Wellington Steeplechase. Double prices were quoted on the card. On July 16 witness wrote another letter notifying the receipt of the double card, and enclosed 10s, asking for a bet on Sir Lethe and The Native. On July 29 he wrote another letter somewhat similar, and two days later he received a reply. Both cards he got in return for his letters were marked ** Yankee Jack," and witness said that he knew that this was the sobriquet used by Law. Mr Myers objected that this could not be admitted. It must be proved that Law did use this name. Witness said that it was a matter of common knowledge. - Constable Doyle said that when he served defendant, the latter said to him: "I know who is responsible for this. It's that Sherlock Holmes up there." In the case against Cowan, Detective Cassells, in evidence, said that he sent him similar letters. In this case he received back cards"marked "C C," which he knew were from Cowan. Mr Myers raised the same objection—namely, that witness only knew by hearsay that "C. C." was Cowan's sign. He could not give his source of information. In the case of Ross the evidence was again similar, but the cards were marked "Y. Z." A postal note «*?nt by Detective Cassells was returned by Ross with a covering letter statin? that defendant had givon up the bookmaking business. His Worship reserved his decision.
