GOLF.

BY BVLiiIU, At the conclueion of the monthly competition on Saturday tho members of the Otago Club mufc in the club house to bid farewell to Mr F. J. Stilling, who leaves shortly to take up his residence in Auckland. ' There was a large gathering, and Mr Tappur (captain), in presenting a small memento to Mr Stilling, made reference to tho work done by that gentleman in the days when *enthusiasts had to work, and work hard, for the pleasure of a round on the links. Present-day golfers arc too prone to forget the work done-in the early days of the club by such men as Mr Stilling, who, being one of the earliest secretarys, a good deal of the work necessarily fell on his shoulders; but ho always rose to the occasion, and having a natural aptitude for organisation, helped to build up the club until to-day it is one of the best-appointed courses in the colonies. Mr Stilling in a neat speech acknowledged the club's gift, and in doing so related some episodes in thfe early history ot tho club. The Otago Ladies' Golf Club played its senior medal competition on Tuesday. The following were the best cards handed in: —

The monthly competition for the St. Andrew's Cross took place at the Balmacewen Links on Saturday afternoon, when Mr Ernest Smith won the gold cross with a score of 1 up on Bogey, and Mr X. w.
