OPENING OF HARBOUR WORKS.

(From Qua Own Correspondent ) WATROA. May 20. Sir James Carroll drove the first pile in connection with the harbour works on Monday. There was a great crowd of country -people and visitors, including Maoris and pakehas from all part* of the North Island. A presentation was made to Sir James Carroll of a gold monkey in commemoration of the event. The weather was beautiful. Maori hakas were given, and a feast was held. During the evening there was a banauet, and a presentation of a gold watch was made to Sir James, who was born at Wairoa, and who has been the member for eo many year*.
