THE SYDNEY SHOW.

SALE OF SOUTHLAND HORSES. (Fhom Oue Own Correspondent.) ■ INVERCABGILL, May 6. Mr Andrew Chrystal, of Lochiel, the well-known Southland exporter to the Commonwealth of Clydesdale stock, returned to the Bluff to-day by the Moana from Sydney. He left the Dominion on March 11 with a consignment of 10 horses, comprising one mare and nine colts, all of which he exhibited at the recent Royal Agricultural Show in Sydney, and was successful in three clashes, having obtained first prize in the three-year-old colts section, for which there were 40 entries, with Sir Colin's Pride, a fine stamp of a colt, bred by Messrs Findlay Bros., of Oreti. In the two-year-old colts class he carried off second honours with Royal Fyvie, by Baron Fyvie, out of an Avon Chieftain mare, and it is worthy of mention that there were no fewer than 81 entries in this class, which speaks volumes for the quality of the Southland-bred stock. _ In the aged class Mr Chrystal "obtained fouiithprize with Speculation, by Shepherd King, out of a Lord Lyon mare. There were 40 entries in this section, and the first prize was 25gs. • Commenting on the show, Mr Chrystal stated that it was one of the best, and the number of entries this year was considered to be a Tecord for Sydney shows. After the show the whole of the consignment was put up for auction, with the exception of Speculation, which he Had sold privately prior to the Bale, the price obtained being 180 gs. Sir Coljn's Pride realised 160 gs ancf Royal Fyvie 145gH. With regard to the sale Mr Chrystal stated to a Southland News reporter that

it was a bad one, there being an absence of buyers, and this condition of affairs he attributed to the drought, which kept buyers from operating to a great extent. Continuing, lie mentioned that a large consignment of horses from Melbourne were unsold, and taken back to the Victorian capital. Concluding, Mr Chrystal mentioned that a New Zealand more put up for auction by Messrs Mitchell and O'Brien realised 200 gs, the purchaser being Mr E. Short, of the North Island, who brought her back to the Dominion.
