UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

I Tho ordinary meeting of the Otago University Council was held on the 6th instant; present—Mr J. Allen, MP. (chancel- , lor). Rev. A. Cameron (vice-chancellor), Dr I Sha'nd, Professor Howitson. Mr J. Robeits, Dr Soott, Mr-T. K. Sidey. M.P., Mr L. W. Harris, and Mr J. H; Walker. An apology for absence was received from Dr Churoh. FIMANCE COMMITTEE. The registrar (Mr Chapman) having comploted a year's service, the following resolution regardm*? his appointment was entered in the minute book:—"That, Mr Chapman having Riven every satisfaction, this committee recommends that his salary be increased to £325 per annum, as by terms j of his enjfhgement." HOME SCIENCE DEPARTMENT. I Professor W. L. Boys Smith reported that the number of students who were taking r.lie whole of one or other of the home science courses were as follows: —Degree, first year, one; degree, second year, two; diploma, first jear, six; diploma, second year, two. A student- had also entered for the wholo course, but was only taking a part- of it this year.' In addition, a number of students had entered for single courses, or groups of courses. Extra students had joined the needlework, practical cookery, theory of cooking, physiology, hygiene, business affairs, nnd household economics classes. The cookery class promised to be very popular. Ten students were already taking it. ar.d two others would probably join a little later on. The class in business affairs numbered 10 stu-. dents. Altogether 29 students were taking one or more classes this session. Already there were three entries for next year, and • a number of interested inquiries.were being made. The outlook was a promising one. Several members expressed pleasure at the fact that the department was growing. GENEBAL. On the motion of Mr Cameron, seconded by Mr Sidey, the Chancellor was appointed as Uio representative of the University on the .Senate. Tho appointment is for six years. Dr Marshall, chairman of tho Profeasorial Board, wrott recommending \V. A. Stuart for the Beverly scholarship in advanced physics, and Hugh Fraser for tl}« Beverly entrance scholarship, which is tenable for three years.—Agreed to. The Chairman of the Professorial Board recommended that the capping ceremony be held on July 5. It was reported that the
