. . GRAND . . Winter Show. Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society. "TRAND WINTER SHOW AND EXHIBITION. Of ■■' f ■ '■- .. ■ Farm Exhibits, Dairy Produce, Home Industries, N.Z. Manufactures, Fat Stock Exhibition, Machinery, Implements," School Competitions, Side Shows, etc., In the Society's BRYDONE HALL, ANNEXES, aritt Messrs Fuller and Sons' NEW HALL, .On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 4th, sth, 6th, and 7th June, 19(12. ALL ENTRIES CLOSE WEDNESDAY, 15th MAY, 1912. This Column will be reserved until Show time for jany information available in reference to the COMING WINTER SHOW. Farmers are.invited to make use of it if they desire to ventilate any useful suggestions in reference to the exhibits. Entries are coming in freely, and applications for floor space are numerous. Present appearances indicate .that the committee will have no difficulty in filling-up all the available space in the' Grand New* Hall and its annexes, and there will, always be ample room provided for anything grown on the-farm. ENTRIES CLOSE On MAY 15. Write them up before that date, and give the secretary a cjhance. - • •'•' , The annual meeting and reunion of mehj-bei-s will be> held this year in the Society's new Board Room, which is much ' mora accessible ".to members .than the Victoria Hall was in former years." : " The Department of Agriculture have advised that it is their intention to endeavour to make an unusually attracive display his year, and have asked that as much floor and wall space "as possible be allotted to them. About one-fourth of Fullers'* Hall, which they had last year, was utilised as a luncheon room, and this year the Committee, propose to place that elsewhere if they can possibly find room for it, and give the Department. the additional space; vacated. . ..." Every farmer in Otago and Southland, and „many also throughout the Dominion, are proud of our Winter Show. They feel that they have a personal interest in a "successful institution, and share the kudos attending its undoubted success year after year.- They .therefore take pleasure in increasing their entries annually and upholding the credit already gained throughout the Dominion. Attendance also increases annually, and arrangements ara mado ahead, so that every member of the household and every assistant on the farm may have an opportunity of benefiting by the" object lessons so abundantly presented at each recurring Show. . The success of this year's operations on the farm justifies the belief that the year 1912 will be no exception to what has been the rule hitherto, and that abundant entries will be sent in. Also, that country residents generally in large numbers from all over the Dominion will make a point of travelling to the Dunedin Winter Show, so as to see the very best the country can produce in stock, produce, and machinery, and acquire as much information as can be assimilated in the short time available from the exhibits generally. Four days is all too short for any person who wishes bo learn all the lessons conveyed by the Winter Shew, and in order to accomplish that successfully the visitor needs to concentrate his attention keenly on the show for most of the time. Needle3s to say, it handsomely repays any farmer to do se*. After all, it rests with the farmers themselves to make the Show a success, though much could be done by the Committee to draw the publiq generally by th» offer of increased attractions. Something of that kind is necessary to the visitor.who does not know the difference between a swede and a carrot, or between a half bred and a merino sheep, or one end of a plough from the other. Last year a very attractive display was made by the City Electrioal Department, and the Arts and Crafts Exhibit of the Technical. School was very much admired by and gave country visitors some idea of the work beincr carried on at that institution. Might we suggest that the school lost nothing by .thus exhibiting their work to country resident*. This year a number of attractions will be provided, but the nature of them has not vet beon determined upon. To their credit bo it said, farmers have always taken a deep interest in the Show, and will continue to do so. The Committee har» a difficulty in securing suitable attractions to cater for the outside public, and ara endeavouring to do so as well as possible} but it rests with the farmer interested in his own institution to make or mar the show by the presence or absence of himself, his adherents, and his'exhibits. SCHEDULES and FTTLL PART TCTJ- * Rft in reference to the Winter Show may be obtained on atinlication to H. V. FULTON. Secretary P.O. Bok 84. Telephone 1031
