EDUCATION RETURN.
The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended March 31, which have been compiled by the Otago Education Board, show that there were in operation in the district 242 schools, employing 211 male and 398 female teachers, besides 18 teachers of needlework. The number of pmpils on the rolls at tho beginning of the quarter was 18,834, and at the end of the quarter 20,535 —comprising 10,698 boys and 9837 girls. Tho average attendance was 9935 boys and 9057 girls, making a total of 18,992, being four more than the previous quarter, and 1049 more than for the March quarter, 1911. The averages for the city and suburban schools were: —Albany Street 654, Forbury 647, Cavershatn 643, Kaikorai 597, George Street 557, N.E. "Valley 540, Normal 521, High Street 517, Macandrew Road 498, Mornington 486, Musselburgh 483, Arthur Street 480, Green Island 359, Moray Place 283, Maori Hill 281, Kensington 280, Ravensbourne 171, St Clair 167, Wakari 157, Anderson's Bay 151, Leith Valley 40. The avera""es for Oamaru were: —North 384, South 321, Middle 188. The averages at the District High Schools were: —Port Chalmers 414, Balclutha 358, Moagiel 330 t Tokomairiro 301, Palmerston 275, Tapareui 204, Alexandra 193, Lawrence 186. Nasoby 124. During the quarter schools were reopened at Kuriwao, Nugget Point, and Glenledi.
