WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Om Own Cofrrspokp-kvt < WELLINGTON. April 27. Unfavourable weather interfered with the success of the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. This notwithstanding, the toto turnover went from £22.874 to £26,261. _ The Taranaki-owned Silva 10.4 was considered the best of the eight competitors engaged in the Karero Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters; but it was one of his off days, as he failed to get into the danger zone. Gold Bird (a champion in the south) managed to get third with 10.8. He \sns ridden by_ the Auckland horseman A. Julian, owing to his usual pilot being laid up with a broken log. The winner turned up in the well-bred Ambrosian (St. Ambrose—Neva). It was her first success in a jumping race. She was ridden by C. Price, w’ho is now at th e head of the list of jumping riders over obstacles. The public would not be put off Silva, who -was again made favourite on the second day. but ho came to grief. The consistent Waterworkt (Sou’-wester —Rita), runner-up on the first day, scored on the second, when Ambrosial (raised 161 b) also started. Your corros pondent fancies Ambrosian is the first of the progeny of imported St. Ambrose (son of St. Simon) to win over fences. A Maiden Hack Race for apprentice l ! brought out 10 budding jocks. The best of them, W. Weller, scored a lucky win on Miss Vena (Boris —Foreshore), runnerup in a race at Masterton. Master Achilles (Achilles —Marionette), a halfbrother to Motoa, was beaten half a head, but should have won had his pilot (T. Rollo) been as experienced as Weller. Miss Vena is the first of the progeny of Boris (Stepniak —Shepherdess), a useful performer when trained at Porirua, to win a race. In the five fulongs race on the second day the Vladimir filly Lady Volga was favourite, but both Mount Victoria (Signalman —Primula) and Miss Vena finished in front of her. J. Maher, the well-known owner-trainer, who has been out of luck for a long time, won a race each day with Merrimac Olcrriwee —Victoria Cross). The two classic races went to the b Q st two-year-olds. In the Manawatu Stakes on the first day Autumnus 8.0 beat E>nengarde 7.12 easily, with Prince Soult 8.0 third. In the Sires’ Produce Stakes on the second day Ermengardo 8.6 accounted for Brown Owl 7.9, Bon Ton 7.12. and Prince Soult 9.0. At both the Auckland summer and autumn meetings Prince Soult shaped like a champion, but according to his Trcntham and Manawatu form he is nothing out of the ordinary. Autumnus has beaten all winning records, while Ermengarde is well up on the list.

Besides Merrimac. Merriwee had another winning' representative in Mulga Bill (Merriwee—Gipsv Queen), who acted as run-ner-up to Mangawahaha (Cordon Rouge— Sandfly) on the opening day, and won on the second. His dam was a useful performer —a daughter of Gipsy King—that did a lot of racing. The Blenheim-owned Negative /Birkenhead —Film) won the Welter on rhe first day. but had no chance with the useful hacks Bonnie Boy (San Fran—Melinite) and Matlow on the second day. Boanerges, who is under orders for Randwick next month, ran third in the big race on the first dav when ridden bv 0. .Tonkins On the second day he was saddled no twice.

In the big race Mr Skipworth was very unfortunate. Out of six horses that went to the post Boanerges and Plantation were left ihe post. Boanerges also took part in the concluding event, the Borough Jlandicap, six furlongs, but was never prominent. Mon Ami (recently purchased by Mr F Martin for £SO) won from Waioru (the full brother to Motoa). Heatherbrae, who has been dodging the handicappers lately, only started on the first day, when she had no difficulty in beating Mon Ami and others in the Telegraph Handicap. Mr Coyle has re-handi-capped her to 8.8 for Hawke’s Bay. Besides winning with Ermengarde, the Highden colours were carried to the fore by Mallard (St. Ambrose —Parera) a halfbrother to N.; land and Boaneges. W. Ryan had the mount. C. Emerson, who is riding in good form at present, rode four winners. Beeline and Glenmore, winners of the steeplechase events at Trentham, are both trained by T. Lloyd at Marton, and were sired by Captain Webb (Natator--Fame), so that it is not surprising that they can jump.
