CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
WAIMATE, April 9. Mr A. J. Allom, District Surveyor, Christchurch, who has been for some days busily engaged in surveying the property of 1700 acres purchased •by the Government from Mr E. C. Studholme on the borough boundary, is leaving for England in a few days. Mr Drury, from the Southland Survey Office, began work this morning in his place. The Government's idea is to cut most of the land into very small sections, from 5 acres to 10 acres, for fruit holdings and workmen's farms in one class, and from 200 to 300 acres of the rich land for strawberry and raspberry culture in the next class, and three or four pastoral sections on the hills. The hill leases will have a clause protecting the remains of the bush in the gullies. The purchase represents an experimental departure, and the Government is understood to be anxious to make it a signal success. The ballot is expected to be held in five weeks' time.
