UNIVERSITY TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THIRD DAY. The weather was fine on the 9th for the continuation of the championship events, but the afternoon was miserably wet. The question of postponement was considered, but it was eventually decided to continue on account of the Victoria and Auckland teams having to go north by the first express to-day The fallowing are the results: LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. Final. Miss Cross (Canterbury) beat Miss Tennont (Victoria), 9—6. It was unfortunate that the match, which was started in the morning, had to be postponed on account of the bad weather. When play was stopped in the morning Miss Tennent was loading, 3 —o. In the afternoon play was resumed in the rain, and under tho circumstances Miss Cross deserved her win. Both ladies played very good tennis considering the conditions. LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Semi-final. Misses Cross and Jamieson (Canterbury) beat Misses Tennent and Cook (Victoriah 9—4. Misses Hunt and Famie (Otago) beat Misses Walker and Borthwiek (Canterbury), Miss Cross and Miss Jamieson combined well together, and on the day were the better pair. Miss Tennent played some really fine shots, but the combination of the Canterbury pair was the culminating feature of the play. Tn the second match the superior play of the Otapo pair was chiefly instrumental in the result, although Miss Walker and Miss Borthwiek both got in some very fine shots. Final. Misses Cross and Jamieson (Canterbury) beat Misses Hunt and Farnio (Otago), 9—4. This same, which was played in light rain, was very even, but the tennis was of poor quality, being limited to lobbing and pat-ball. Otago occasionally put In some good rallies, and brought the score from s—o to 7 —4, but throughout the winners always had something in hand. MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. Second Round. Smith (Canterbury) beat Thompson (Otago), 6—2, 6—3. Jennings (Canterbury) beat Partridge (Otago), 6—l, 6—o. Thompson's play was rather erratic, and he appeared to be somewhat careless with several shots, though the game was more even than the score might indicate. Smith's plav was by far superior. Jennings's all-round superior play completely outclassed Partridge, who, under the circumstances, put up a very creditable fight. Final. The final round, being between Canterbury representatives, will be played out in Christchuroh.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Second Round. Abewiethy and Parsonson (Canterbury) beat Miles and White (Otago), 6—2, 6—o. Cleg-horn and Parker (Victoria) beat Bruoe-Soott and Jacob sea (Auckland), 6 —2, 6—2 Jennings and Smith Canterbury) beat Campbell and Reynolds (Auckland), 6—l, 6—o. Partridge and Thompson (Otago) beat Brown and Reid ("Victoria), I—6, 6 —3, 6 —5. Third Round. Cleghorn and Parker won from Abernethy and Parsoneon by default. Jennings and Sdnith beat Partridge and Thompson, 6—o, 6—l. Final. Jennings and Smith beat Cleghorn and Parker, 6—2, 6—3. This match was played in the rain, and under the circumstances the tennis display was of an exceedingly high order. Jennings's smashing was a deciding feature in the result. COMBINED CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Final. Miss Cross and L S. Jennings (Canterbury) beat Miss Tennent and G. M. Cleghorn (Victoria). 6—2, 6—o. This was a somewhat easy victory for the Canterbury representatives.
