G. W. Russell s remarks concerning the issuing of totalizator ■ permits for the forthcoming season, thorn is some activity among country clubs to press their claims. Certainly the new Minister of Internal Affairs remarks left an impression that country clubs could look for more favourable treatment than they received at the hands of the Racing Commission, desnite the fact that the Gammfr Aot of'hist Parliament put a statutory limit on the number of permits to be issued.Whether or not the Minister's utterances may be taken to foreshadow a further amendment to enlarge the statutory limit there are quite a number of country clubs ill the north hopeful of receiving permits. Thiis week the Northern Wairoa Racing Club was resuscitated under the presidency of Mr J. G. Coates, M.P. for the district Tt was decided to purchase 125 acres, and have it ploughed and got in order at once. Four hundred pounds odd: of debentures •were sold at the meeting, and an influential committee set up There are other country clubs' also announcing tneir intention of putting forward claims to totalisator permits.
