M'Ewen's grounds at Waitati on Monday afternoon, in weoiher that struck a happy medium, being neither too cold for the spectators nor too hot for the competitors. The ground was slightly damp, and this had the effect of making tho track somewhat heavier than it would otherwise have been. The degree of popularity which this sports gathering has attained was attested to by the largo attendance of tho public, and the splendid f.olds in practically every event The number present was estimated at considerably over 400, a;id the gate money amounted to £l9 14s. The largo attendance is accounted for by the fact that Waitati is an extremely popular locality with holidaymakers, and the*©, principally represented by ladies, formed the bulk of the spectators. M Kay was mainly res)x>nsib!o for tho handicapping, and tho excellence of his work was made evident throughout tho afternoon in the close finishes to almost every race.
