BOWLING.

04 HA RL 10L IL\ A JIE.YI. KEEN COMPETITION. (Fkoii Oua Own C'okrespondext.) OAMARU, April 5. The annual bowling tournament, held under the auspices of the combined Meadowbank and Phoenix Clubs, was opened to-day under conditions not of a favourablo kind. A light drizzling rain yesterday afternoon and an increased density in the drizzle this morning created a doubt as to the proverbial luck of the Oa-maru bowling tournament in the matter of weather being continued this year; but the morning had not far advanced ere the drizzle ceased and the sun shed his rays upon the greens, the remainder of the day being excellent for outdoor games. There was a falling oft' in the entries this year, so that there was no need to draw upon the Waimate Green for accommodation, the 48 rinks entered being provided for by the three Oamaru Greens. These were all in splendid condition, that of the Meadowbank Club, which on former occasions had left something to be desired, being pronounced almost perfect. The new green of the Phoenix Club, upon which a good deal of attention has been devoted, was also in excellent condition, and, of course, the same club's original green maintained its reputation as one of the finest in the Dominion. The day was devoted to play in the rink contests, the chief of these being the CITIZENS' PRIZES. For rinks. Three sets of prizes, each conconsisting of four trophies or medals. PIKENIX OLD GREEN. The greens again played well, being especially keen when the sun was shining. There was a great gathering of -pectators, who showed keen interest in the progress of the games. The chief interest centred ii: tlie concluding games of tin.' Citizens' Competition. The principal event of the tournament, the semi-final, between Harraway (Dunedin) and Waddell (Phoenix) was exceedingly keen. At the seventh head Harraway was three up, but at the fourteenth the scores were:—Harraway 15, Waddell 14. Two similes to Harraway wore followed by one and three to Waddell, who gained a lead. Throe to Harraway and two lo Waddell left (.he scores oven with one head. The Dunedin man was lying two after the first and seconds had played. WaddeH'a third man played to move the kitty, and just failed. 'I lie guard was nicely placed by Ilarraway's third, and Waddell's efforts to change the position were futile. The succeeding game between Harraway and Abbott (N'ortb-Eust Valley) was really won by the former by the solid plav of his team. At .the seventh head Duhedin's total was 10 to 2. bur the Valley men then came to light, the rJcip playing a succession of beautiful draw shot-, the scores at the fourteenth head being— Harraway 31, Abbott 10. Then six at the fifteenth head gave Harraway a lead of seven, and though tin; play was keen, the issue was never in doubt Waddell and Abbott started to plav off for second place, hut had only completed eight heads when a postponement to the following morninir took place. It was a complete runaway for the local men. In" secies being - V, added 18. Abbott. 1. with 11 heads to sro. In the tina! for 'he Meadowbank prizes Porter went nwav with a strong lead and at the close of the fifteenth head had a load of 10, _ the scores being 19 to 9. Then Mollison's team scored steadily, and finally won bv 21 to 9. The game between F. Smith and C. Bee in the fifth round of the Phoenix pairs proved a surprise at the finish. Smith was 4 up. and lyintr shot in the final head; but Bee, with his third bow!, ran Smith's

shot out, and placed his own bowls for 5. Smith failed with his last shot, and Bee won by one. The following are the details: — RINKS MATCHES. Citizens' Prizes. Semi-final.
