When th'n Stratford Borough Council ascertained that the actual expenditure for tho year was less than the original estimate by several hundreds of pounds, the matter was put right hv deciding- to purchase a steam roller, and thus to balance accounts. The civil cases heard in tho Ohristehurch Magistrate's Court for the past vear numbered 4782 of which 2837 ca,*os wore tried. Tho amounts sued for totalled £55.377 8a 7d and judgments were given for amounts totalling £31,933 12s Bd. It is stated that tho Canterbury Land Board intends exorcising its discretionary power and allowing only married applicants to go to ballot for tho Four Peaks runs.
