CRIME IN AUCKLAND.
AUCKLAND, April 2. The need for more police on the Auckland staff was the subject on which Inspector Cullen enlarged in his last departmental report; but so far there appears no immediate intention of increasing the staff in the city and suburbs, though the Inspector urged' the point strongly and on adequate ground*. There is no doubt that the community is not adequately policed. Beyond the inspector's report to that effect there is strong corroborative evidence of offences committed in connection with which no arrest has been made. To mention some of the more recent of one may recall the caee of a nude infant found (not drowned) in the harbour a few weeks ago two assaults committed on women at night in the vicinity of Epsom and Newmarket, two burglaries at Ponsonby, the assault on a man the other day in the City Hotel, the assault a week back on Dr *Moir, and at least one death at the inquest on which the verdict was " manslaughter against some person or persons unknown."
