UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE.
ROTH BOATS SWAMPED. LONDON, March 30. Strong westerly winds and choppy water were the conditions under which the Oxford-Cam bridge annual boat race was rowed. Oxford won the toss, and at Surrey Station quickly led by half a length, which was increased to five lengths at Harrods, where the Cambridge boat swamped. Some members of the crew swam ashore, while others rescued the boat. Oxford continued steadily through the water, but the boat sank opposite
, Thorneycrofts. The crew swam ashore, | emptied the boat, re-embarked, and I iiaddled steadily to Mortlake, and finished in 29min. The race was declared void. A REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE. LONDON, March 31. Cambridge had the outer position, and t felt the heavy weather earlier than their i opponents. They shipped water shortly j after the start, and after going a mile ■ they dropped the race, as the boat was I gradually sinking. When rounding Harrod's it was awash, so the crew jumped overboard. The Oxford crew hugged the shore, but as the boat was gradually filling they pulled ashore at Chiswick and emptied it, j and resumed again. The boat was waterlogged at the finish, and the crew received a severe gruelling. The ofiicials declared it to be no race owing to others than the crew having helped Oxford to bail out the boat at Chiswick. The race will be re-rowed on Monday.
