Bt Ravenswosth. MELBOURNE, March 26. Anolhor successful meeting was hold at Moonco Valley last Saturday, when the stakes for six events totalled £IOOO. The leading item on the card was the Valley Handicap, of 250sovs, one milo and aquartor. The Positano mare Nyan 8.0 was a pronounced favourite, with Optimism 7.8 and Braw Soot 9.0. next, in demand. The ■wianar, however, turned up in the outsider, T.a George 7.6, ridd'en by G. Rose, who has boon out of luck for some time. lie scored by three-quarters of a length from Braw Scot, who finished well. La Georfre is by the Carbine horse George Frederick, who has cot many useful horses. Queding

10.8, by Harmonist, followed up his form on this course a few weeks ago by easily taking the Hurdle Race, and the New Zealander, Merry Monarch 9.5, with W. M'Kinnon up. was second. Merry Monarch, as usual, failed to stay. Malbay. the favourite for the Maiden Plate, was bdly interfered with, and it was left to the two-year-old Flask to win, with something to spare, from Austra and a numerous field. Flask carries tho Trafalgar colours, and is trained for the Messrs Mitchell by W. S. Hiekenbothain. She is a sister to Ma'.dant by Maltster from the Newmarket Handicap winner Pendant, by Far Niewte from Necklet, by Musket. Early in the season Fla-sk carried the colours of Mr K S. MacLeod, who gave 57ogs for the filly as a yearling, but she failed to reproduce her track form, and, on going for sale in November, was secured by the Messrs Mitchell for 600 gs. W. Smart rode a couple of winners at the meeting, getting Beresford 7.13, by The Vice-Admiral, home in the Welter Plate, and Takipono 8.3 in the Glenroy Handicap, while he was second on Braw Scot in the Valley Handicap. He landed Beresford a clever winner from Abdicator, who did net quite see out the race. Takipono's win in the Glenroy Handicap was a very easy one. Takipono. who is a stable companion of Flask, in by imported Challenger from that successful brood mare Fides, dam of True Scot Loyal Scot, Braw Scot, etc. Takipono was bred by his owner. Mr J. Rouen, in South Australia. A fine exhibition of riding was given by H. Cairns on Yandilla King and N. D. Godby on England in the Welter Purse. Each jockey rode a powerful finish without knocking his horse about, and. though Godby coaxed England to run much better than for some time, he could not rpiite get Mr Miller's gelding home, Yandilla King lasting long enough, and won by a head 1 . Yandilla King is by Le Glanem. RACING IN SYDNEY. The Rosehill Racing Club autumn meeting was concluded en Saturday, when the Rosehill Cup, ot ICOOsovs. one mile and aquarter, was decided. There was a good field, and Flaxen 9.4, wiih J. E. Pike up, went out favourite the others backed including Wood 7.10, Crown Thistle 8.12, and Kurnell 9.0. Flaxen, who is by imported Flavus, and is trained by W. Kelso, won by a length from Kurnell —a winner at the recent V.R.C. meeting. Crown Thistle was third, and Jewelstone, Didus, and Woad the nearest of the others. A hot favourite in Landlord 9.9, by Nobleman, was successful in the Hurdle Race. Golden Hop 8.4 won the Nursery Handicap for Mr J. E. O'Brien. The colt is by Maltster from Anions (dam of Dunolly and Golden Point), by Wallace from Aura, by Richmond from Instep (imp.), by Lord Clifden, so is very attractively bred. Golden Hop is an acceptor for the Sires' Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes, to be run at the A.J.C. autumn meeting. After Golden Hop had carried Mr 11. Alan Curric's colours to victory in tho Two-year-old Selling Race at Flemington last spring he was sold by auction. Mr O'Brien secured him for 600 gs. Mr O'Brien also won tho weight-for-ago event, the Rawson Stakes, with another Maltster in Malt King. The Caulfield Cup winner, Lady Medallist (who was fancied) running him to a neck, while the A.J.C. St. Legor candidate, Jacamar, was third. Malt King is apparently back to his best form, and his meeting with Trafalgar in tho A. J C. Autumn Stakes will be an event of great interest. Another Maltster to win at Rosehill on Saturday was Malthusian 7.8, who carried Mr D U. Seaton's colours to victory in the Clyde Stakes, seven furlongs. Malthusian, who was a rank outsider, only beat Alured 7.5, by a short bead. Bright Laddie 9.4. was third, and the favourite. Giganrlra 9.7 fourth. The Carlingford" Mile went to Barlow 8.3, byimported Fortunatus. RACING IN ADELAIDE. The South Austirdian Jockey Club held a meeting on Saturday, when the principal event, the Somerton Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, ended in a dead heat between Thorrnio 7.2, by Audria, and Rigilette 6.7, by Pistol. Neither was fancied much. Tho stakes were divided. Two other Pistols to score were Ethel Maud 7.10, in the Welter Handicap, one mile, and Muskrt Belie, 8.9, in the Fonrestville Handicap. six furlongs. The Hurdle Race went to Battlebridge 10.(J. by Tostig (imp.); the Steeplechase to Billy Buttons 10.0, by Paradox, and the Patawalonga Stakes, six furlongs, to Tri Hi 8.9. by Tostig. The running in connection with the Hurdle Race called for three inquiries. The stewards asked Mooney to explain the running of Royal Malion, and he was cautioned as to his riding. Mortem eased Hardraoa right no in the last 50 yards in the same rare, and lost third money. He was suspended for a month. M'M-abon. -who piloted Thunder Spec, was also before the officials, and his explanation that hi? mount was in n<, condition and had no experience over 1 urdles was accented. After thr Somerton Handicap the stewards inquired into the circumstances that Harmer, while only declaring 31'b overweight for Valediction, was considerably over 51b overweight when he returned after the race. Keily, the trainer of the horse, was severely reprimanded RACING AT BALLARAT. The Ballarat Turf Club held a very successful two days' meeting last week. The Ballarat Cup, of 175-ovs, one mile and a-half. was run on the first day, and attracted nine runners. Cbauvelin 8.8 went out favourite, with half a dozen of the other starters well backed. After going half a mil'- Coolagunyah 8.1 was taken to the front, and Lewis rode a nice waiting race in front. He kept the lead until about 50 yards from the post, when Chau-vcl-.n, who had always been going well, ran past him, and won rather easily by a length. Chnuvolin. who was bred in NewZealand, performed well dining the Tasmanian fortnight, and is a good horse when in the humour. He is. however, not particularly reliable. Brazil, who was greatly fancied by his narty, ran disappointingly, while Simon's Fortune, also fancied, was the last home. The other winners during the afternoon were Camasadc (by Fleet Admiral), Sidera (by Simmer), Moorupar (by Carbinier), Freinbex (by Ibex), and Apiarist (by Coil). The chief event on the second day was the Ballbansen Handicap, of lOOsovs. one mile. There were nine starters, ami the Jumpers' Flat racer, Belfast 6.9 was unexpectedly made favourite. _ He ran a disappointing race, and die winner turned up in Monody 9.5. ridden by N. D. Godby. Monody h-d till the way. and easily stalled otf Meringue 8.5 at the finish. Frcmbex 7.9 looked to have a chance at the homo nun, but failed to stay. The other win-

n.ers were Arum (by Rucnalf), Polenta (by Goya). Madam Donald (by Donald). Sidera (by Simmer), and Muaiano (by Murillo). TROTTING. The Melbourne Trotting Club bold another successful meeting at Fitzroy last Monday, when the starters for six events numbered over 70. The principal event (£100), one mile and a-quarter, for 2.35 horses, went, to the St. Louis gelding Rcxii (65 yards behind), with Bill Whip (60 yards behind) in second place, beaten by five yards. The winner was favourite. Thehna (by Frank Bobbins) beat the hot favourite, Billy Mac, by three yards in the Trial Handicap Trot. Kathleen caught her hopples and fell at the back while leading, causing the well-backed Molly V to fall over her. V. Jones, the driver of Kathleen, sustained a broken collar-bone. In the next trot —the Flying Handicap, one mile —the heavily-backed pair Lady Mazy and Marie Direct fought out a close finish. Marie Direct headed the American mare, and, swerving from the shouts of the leger patrons, crossed in front of Lady Mazy, and then won by only half a head. L. Robertson, the driver of the second horse, refrained from entering a protest for crossing, much to the surprise of the onlookers. However, the stewards interposed, but after hearing the explanations of both reinsmen they decided not to disturb the judge's decision. A fine performance was accomplished by the Bent wood gelding Goodwood in the 2.40 class trot. He paced the mile (faultlessly in 2.30, and scored easily from Bonnie Alice and Machine Gun. The winner clipped over lOsec off his previous best record. Molly V, who is by Osterley, came out again in the Trotters' Handicap, nine furlongs, and won easily from Belle Wilkes, while Florence won' the Tradesman's Trot. MISCELLANEOUS. At a further sitting < n Thursday of the Select, Committee appointed to investigate the operations of the Australian Jockey Club, Mr Thrower (the president) stated that since the last meeting it had been resolved that it would be impossible to continue the investigations any further this session. He had conferred with Mr M'Gowen, and it had been decided to adjourn the committee until next session. The commission, however, would be constituted again next session, and with the same statutory powers. Mr C. W. Cropper (secretary of the A.J.C.) tendered a document, containing answers to a number of questions, which the A.J.C. had been asked to supply. The principal event at the Kalgoorlio (W. A.) meeting, the Summer Cup, of 300sovs, one mile and a-half, attracted eight runners, wiih Murella 7.7 favourite and Somnambulist 8.11 and Saladin 8.12 next in demand. Under instructions left in the will of the late Mr George Lee the famous brood mare Etra Weenie (dam of Diffidence, Wigelmar, Leeholme, Murria, Merriwee, and Posadas) was recently destroyed. Cannon Wheel (Pistol—Limber) won the principal event at the Hobart Turf Club on Saturday.
