WEST COAST NOTES.

(Fr.Oif Our Own CoßP.'F.spoxnKXT.) GREYMOUTH, April 1. Cr Perkins, and probably Cr Kerr, will contest the Greymouth mayoralty. A serious leak was discovered in the Government dam at Larrikins on Friday night. The breastwork ia peculiarly constructed of timber and earthwork, and bv some means t-he water got behind the timber and so caused the leak. Mr Rochford, the maanger, has had three shifts of men employed constantly since the outbreak was discovered, for it is feared that if a heavy fresh came the' whole dam would bo washed away. A trial was made of the Trans-Tere-makau water race on Saturday in the presence of Mr J. IT. Lewis, Public Works Engineer, and Mr Rochford, general manager. Unfortunately an old cast iron syphon pipe which had been obtained from Kawahaka, -where it had been in use 30 years ago, was unable to stand the ejtrain and burnt, (Scattering the fracrments in nil directions. This pipe had been placed in the gully near M'Grath's water race, and was discovered in it. It was strengthened by a band, but the pressure of 1801 b was too much for it, and it gave way. The damage is not serious, and can easily be repaired. The other part of the pipes easily stood the test, and, as one gentleman remarked who was present, " I was unable to get enough water from any leak to dilute my whisky with."
