NEW YORK, January 19

The trial of Schmitz, ex-Mayor of San Francisco, has been ordered to he begun. The indictment returned in 1907 charging him with bribery was not acted on till December, when Judge Lawlor decided to press the case.

[Schmitz, who was Mayor of San Francisco at the time of the great earthquake in 1906, has been indicted upon a charge of receiving a bribe of £IO,OOO in connection with the municipal scandals following upon the eartrquake disaster.]
