WORKMEN'S HOMES.
LAND LYING IDLE. (JThom Our Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, January 15
Years ago (says the Post] the Government purchased a large block of land at Petone for the erection of workmen’s cottages. Comparatively few of the sections have been built upon, with the result that the bulk of the land is lying idle. No rates arc paid on the property by the State, and this fact, in addition to the locking up of what are looked upon as suitable building areas, has for a Jong time past proved a thorn in the side of the local Borough Council. Upon the matter casually cropping up at a meeting of the body last night, Councillor Short described the position as iniquitous, and one that should Tint bo tolerated any longer. Other councillors expressed their concurrence with their fellow member in a motion, which was carried unanimously, asking the Minister of Lands if it was his intention to make any use of the land known as the Mudgway estate, and if not, was he prepared to sell sections to private individuals for the purpose of erecting homes for themselves.
