DOMINION DEFENCE FORCES.

NEW MOUNTAIN GUN. (Those Oub Own Cobrespondent.) WELLINGTON, January 18. The new mountain gun is a quickfirer, its calibre being 2.95 m. It is made of steel, and its weight with breech fittings is 2561 b. It has a percussion fire mechanism. The cartridge is either cordite or ballistite. Tho following projectiles are used : (1) Shrapnel, weight 121 b. mode of steel, containing 175 bullets. This ie a man-killing projectile. (2) Common shell, weight 181 b, for destructive effect on material. (3) Case shot, containing 355 bullets, a man killing shell at close range. (4) A star shell for lighting up the enemy’s position at night. The fuse used is a time and percussion fuse, No. 60. Each gun requires six mules for transport — namely, wheel and axle mule and carriage mule, a cradle mule, a gun mule, and two ammunition mules. Tho approximate weight yarned by each mule is 3101 b.
