Second Day—Thursday, January 18. The concluding’ day of the Goto Racing Club's meeting was commenced in Hull and threatening weather. Heavy rain had set in overnight, but beyond a few showers it held off until a few minutes before the last race, when a torrential downpour commenced to fall. An unfortunate disaster occurred in the first race. Gryta tv as running clear of everything when she slipped and fell. Obi, who ayus close up, fell over her, and Larkspur and Seekaehore were brought down by tripping over- the prostrate horses. 11. Sparkos, the rider of

Larkspur was galloped on, and was injured in the chest and collarbone, but the other riders escaped serious injury. Sparkea was dazed, but was quite conscious before being removed to the hospital. The writer inspected the track prior to the commencement of the racing, and, although the lay of the ground is not too good where the accident occurred, the opinion was formed that the horses fell more through the dangerous foothold of the glassy surface than anything else. The grass on the track becomes very glas-j r at times, and consequently is doubly dangerous where the ground slopes. Horses have also been noticed slipping at the turn out of the straight. At the spot where the accident occurred the track commences to slope on the turn, but goes with the running until about four or five horse widths from the rails, where the ground dips towards, the outside. This, of course, is a most dangerous formation for a turn under favourable circumstances. However, the track wou.d be quite safe for fear or five horses running abreast, but when the weather has made the grass slippery the foothold is very risky. After the accident the stewards decided to run the Progressive Trot as the second race, and prior to the next flat race the track was disc harrowed over the dangerous ground, and also along the straight and into (he baok stretch. It is imperative that some improvement should be made on the track, as other accidents have occurred at the same spot, notably that of Astrakhan, who last season received injuries which necessitated his destruction. During the day £7524 was registered on the machine, making £15.368 for the meeting, or £5218 in excess of the figures for last voir, when the bookmakers were licensed. WELLINGTON RACES. First Day—Saturday, January 20

Thu Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting oj>ened to-day under doubtful conditions. Short showers fell early in the day, but the weather cleared up as the day progressed. The attendance was on the short side. Some interesting racing was witnessed although the fields, wore not large. Tlio youngster event was a gift for Styx, who had no trouble in annexing it. The cup produced a field of 14, and a capital race ensued Undecided was a surprise packet. Ho came right from the ruck aheut two furlongs from home, and the rest of the field were not in the hunt. In the Telegraph Handicap a field of 14 faced the starter; Several of the entrants made trouble at the post, and ■in consequence the start was somewhat ragged. Mr Duckley’s Dearest put up a good performance, clearing the field by two lengths at the business end of the event. Equitas. who was well fancied by the public, could do nothing better than fill fourth place. Dearest. however, failed to draw the weight, and the race was awarded to Nyland. A noticeable improvement on the course was the alteration of the five-fur-long start. The present location gives a straight run of about a furlong in place of the corner start as heretofore. The Now Sotith Wales Totalisator Commissioners attended the meeting. The machine figures for the day were £22.675 lOe, as compared with £10,307 for the corresponding day last year. A protest against Sanguinary in the seventh race for boring in the straight was dismissed. The following are the results ;
