NAVAL ARMAMENTS

INCREASES ON THE CONTINENT. LONDON, January 21.

It is announced that Italy quite unexpectedly proposes to build two more largo Dreadnoughts. The forecast of the Kus. sian naval programme and of Italy’s increase is considered more notable as it follows on Germany’s intended three capital ships yearly, instead of two, as provided for by the Navy Law. ST. PETERSBURG, January 21.

Ministers are preparing a bill to establish new r bases in the Baltic, and also to construct within five years four supercruisers, besides auxiliary cruisers, transports, torpedoers, and submarines, at a total outlay of £50,000,000.

GERMANY’S INTENTIONS

The Daily Telegraph’s forecast of the German naval shipbuilding programme indicates a recrudescence of rivalry of a more intense form. It states that Germany’s contemplated expenditure for 1911-12 under the 1900 law has been doubled. She is building or has built nine additional battleships, has doubled her destroyer fleet, and has commenced outside the provisions of the navy law 24 submarines.
