ALIENS IN AUSTRALIA.
NON-EUROPEAN POPULATION. An interesting return in connection with the census has been compiled by the Commonwealth Bureau of Statistics. It gives in detail the nature of the non-European population of Australia. From it the following tables are extracted : NON-EUROPEANS IN AUSTRALIA.
Total Commonwealth ... 38,077 33,165 25,772 In 1901 there were 2623 half-caste Chinese, and in 1911 3019. The number of Japanese in Australia has not altered greatly w-ithin the last 10 years, being 3576 in 1911, as compared with 3554 in 1901. In 1901 Queonlund, with 2269, had by far the greater number. In 1911 the majority of tho Japanese, 1742. were in West Australia, while tho number of Japanese in Queensland had fallen to 1503. Victoria had only 67 Japancso inhabitants last year.
