LUMSDEN ANGLICAN CHURCH.
It was decided some time ago to cele» brat© the completion of the vicarage at Lumsden by holding a garden party, to which representatives from all parte of fcbe district were to bo invited. This gathering was held on Wednesday, 10th inst., -'ana 1 ; between 70 and 80 ladKeand. gentlemen -' accepted the invitation'. Early iri the afternoon the members of the congregation ar- -;- rived from Balfour, Riversda.e, Waikaia, Castle Rock, and other parts of the parish. Tea and cake had been provided by th.® ladies of the Lumsden section umder <ii« ' direction of Mrs Uphill, and ample justioa was done to the tempting viands. The Key, - Mr Uphill, in a brief speech, congratulated the congregation on the successful results of their united effort to secure for their minister a suitable residence. The building wax a splendid proof, of the unity .of' purposß which distinguished s the people of the •■•. parish, and he hoped that the. yicarag* would etill further ltelp to increase that . unity, as its doors would ever be open ta those who sought counsel, guidance, or support in trouble or affliction. Mr G. F. Johnson (Lumsden). Mr BayliSa (Riversdale), and Mr James Butler (Balfour) also spoke, each eulogising the generosity of their respective sections of fcha congregation which responded roost freely, ~ , to the appeal for fcmds for the erection of the vicarage. Lumsden's share had beea. ,- £3OO, Riversdalo £l3O, and other district* correspondingly smaller aroounts. It* people, too should be a grateful one, possessing as they did the rich endowment of ferti.e soil and genial climate, and that their religion* eenso was sound was evidenced by tha existence all over the country of handsomechurches wherein they worshipped the l*iver. of S fi o o ngT bv Mr* M'Pherson also contributed a pianoforte selection. After tea the inevitable photos were taken bv Professor Howchin. On Thursday afternoon a picnic was neldf for the children of the congregation. Game* under the direction of the vicar were Mr dulled in, and tea, oake«and fruit were in abundant supply. Splendid weath- both davs made the gatherings thoroughly enjoyable and successful.
