MELBOURNE, January 9 RACING IN MELBOURNE.
The feature of the racing at Mentone last Saturday was the size of the fields. There were 102 runners for the six events. The horses running were mostly moderate. On© or two fair horses, however, started in the Mentone Handicap, run over a mile. The New Zealandor Sharpshooter was one of these, but with 9.7 up he could finish no nearer than third to Francis 7.11 and Optimism 7.7. Francis is by San Francisco, and carries the colours of Mr A. T. Creswick, an owner whoso luck is hardly oommens.urate with his pluck in buying horseflesh. Another New Zealander in Merrie Zealand 8.13 was in the field, but made no show. The Ohesterman -gelding Brownie 9.9 was equal to beating the favourite Bettewynd 11.5 in the Hurdle Race, while in a big field Shaekleton 7.5 (by Andria) easilylanded the First Division Handicap. Both Brownie and iShiaokre>son /went K»U't at remunerative prices. Recalles 9.0 (by Flavus, imp.) was ridden to victory by H. Cairns in the Second Division Handicap, while the Third Division Handicap went to the imported mare Inyudian 7.13 (by lan). Inyudian has always shown plenty of pace, but has hitherto stopped badly at the end of her races. The Jumpers' Flat Race provided a good finish. Mettle 9.7 (byFavour) beating Optima 9.11 by half a head in the last stride.
A race meeting was held at Richmond last Tuesday in fine weather. There was a splendid attendance. Mr Wren is doing remarkablv well with his three courses in Melbourne. The 13.3 hand pony race went to Ornament 7.11 (by Lardy Dardy). She just squeezed home from Fuz Buz and Silence, who ran a dead heat for second money. E. S. Grace rode the winner vigorously, whilst his brother, G. Grace, had the mount on Fuz Buz. The West Austra-liaJi galloway Lock Gun 8.7, who is bv Flintlock (son of Carbine), was made favourite for the Trial Handicap, and she won oomfortably from the unlucky Oberon and seven others. Despite his increased weight for recent successes. Fluten was made favourite for the event for 14-handers. Godby rode a waiting race on him, but Fluten failed to respond under his 11.5 when Ehe straight was entered. The Predominant pony Future, who was receiving a stone from Fluten, started at a nioe price, and romped home from the well-backed pair. Auraria and Cyndi. Another ra"k outsider was successful in the Stewards' Pl>'e (for 13 3 hand's ponie ) th's Vo : nc-the ancient mare Lady Yathoroo 7.0 (by Yatheroo). There were a dozen starters, b?st backed being Bonnie, Eva, and Cyclone. Nine galloways contested the seven furlontrs event for that class, and Tyche was made favourite, only to have her chance spoilt through being nea>-l-v knocked do-vn in a scrimmage around the first turn. L. Fi-shor rode a nice waitintr race on the we'l-backed Preston mare Mountain Rose 7.13. and just squeezed her home bv a head from Bria-ht Metal. Fisher had a harmless fall off his mount through a stirrup leather breaking after Mountain Rose had passed the winning post. The West Australian gelding Tuneful 10.1 (bv Harmoni'ti wai made a warm favourite for the concluding seven-furlonjr event for horses, and he defeated his eitnht opponents without beinsr extended under the substantial impost of RACING IX SYDNEY. The chief event at the Moorefield meeting on Saturday was the January Handicap, ono mile and a-quarter. Majuba 7.7, the favourite, was beaten a head by tho moderately - fancied Cashmore 7.7, by Amberite (son of Carbine). Coronata 7.8, a very hot fuvourite for the Nursery Handicap, "was beaten by Amy C. 7.5, who is by tho Musket horse Mousquoton from Linnet, by Beauchamp. Two hot favourites were, however, successful —Precious 8.8, bv Maltster, in tho Flying Handicap, and Boctivo 8.9, by St. Alwyne (imp.), in tho Scarborough Welter. The other winners wore Pan Out (by Brakpan), and Valmia (by imported Fortunatus). W. H. Smith was second on three occasions. An investigation into some interference which Scotch. Queen met with in tho Flying Handicap from Peronella showed that G. I'inn, tho rider of the latter, was at fault, but the stipendiary stewards deemed that a caution, would meet the case. An inquiry into the running of Pensant in the Stewards' Mile resulted in the mare, her owner (T. Joseph), and rider (J. Wilson) being disqualified for 12 months, under rule 151. For cutting across the field too quickly after the start for the January Handicap a severe caution was administered to J. Townsond, who had the mount on Ooshmore. While taking part in the Kogarah Stakes the second favourite, Maying, who was running well forward at the bend, suddenly dropped back. An inquiry showed that her loss of position was due to interference bv Wallon, who ran so erratically at Randwick a week before, that the authorities recommended a refusal of his nomination until better behaviour was assured.
