Within the past few days an officer of the Slock Department has been purchasing in Hawera and other Taranaki districts horses for the Defence Department. Useful active sorts, of the milk-cart type, „havo been most sought after, as the horses are required for the artillery branch of the service. Over two miles of the Otina tunnel have now been" pierced, and of that distance about ono mile and a-half hae been lined. Concrete is being used for lining the tunnel instead of brick. Shingle is being obtained from the Bealey River at one end, and from the Rolleston River at the other. During the year just ended 2707 dogs wore registered with the Ash burton County Council, as against 2731 for 1910. During the past year 83 traction enjrines were registered in the county, as against 78 for 1910.
