NEW YORK, January 2. Enraged because of the refusal to issue a prescription ordering a pint of whisky, a man named Hatfield shot dead Dr Thornton, a well-known physician at Charlaton, West Virginia. The latter was attending an injured person -when he was killed. Hatfield fled, but was captured. Owing to a fear of lynching a force of sheriffs is guarding the prison.
