LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP.
The Otago Ladies’ Golf Club’s annual New N ear tournament was commenced at the Balrnacowen Links on Wednesday. The Ladios’ Championship of Otago is decided right out on the gross score obtained in two medal matches of 18 holes. There were 28 entries, considerably less than the number last year, and for the first round played the morning cards were returned by 17 copiSetitors. In the afternoon a Bogey Hanioap was decided l . The scores throughout the day were not so good as might have been expected. Some of the greens were not in good condition, and the ladies found the grass heavy for them in many places. A strong north-westerly wind, too, did hot tend to improve the scores. In the- Championship the only gross score under 100 was that of Miss Gould, who did the round in 98. Miss Gould ie the present holder of the Otago championship, and was runner-up last year for the ladies’ championship of New Zealand. The next best cards were those of Miss Mill (101), Mrs M’Carthy (102), and Mrs Ward (103). The Modal Handicap was won by Miss Mill with a r handicap of 13 and a net score of 88. Mias C. Williams with a handicap of 19 and a net score of 90 came second. The winner and runner-up in the championship cannot take prises in the handicap. In the afternoon the ladies were playing against a very stiff bi'gey of 83, which is only one more than that set for the men over the same course. The winner proved to be Mies C. Williams, who had a handicap of 14, and ended 6 down. Three ppayers—Mrs Ward, Miss Mill, and Miss B. Glondinir.g—scored 7 down, and. the tie for second place will have to be decided at some future time.
