W. F. Trembath, the. Gore middle-dis-tance runner, who has been competing sue- | oessfully at various meetings in Australia, and who recently defeated Taylor in Sydney, returned to New Zealand a couple of weeks ago. Trembath was n competitor at the South Canterbury meeting, but was asked to give away too much, and was unsuccessful. Trembath has returned to his home in Gore, and will spell from racing for some time. “ Lockie ” M‘Lachlan, looking well after a lengthy tour of Australia, returned to . Dunedin last week. In a brief chat be in- j formed me that he was well pleased, with the tour, though they had not succeeded in taking all the prize money out of Austra'ia. In respect to the proposed tour of England bv Trembath, it was discovered through private sources that the prospects were not • mod. and it was decided to abandon the trio in the meantime. The match between Trembath and Taylor did not turn out quite what was -expected (says a Sydney writer). In the fir ft place, Taylor should never have the starter. Ho had not recovered from an attack of dengue fever contr-cted’ whilst in Queensland recently. This was the cause of the easy defeats administered to him by Arthur Postle also. When Taylor could not see the sprint distances out. against Postle, he had no chance in life of finishing out the middle distance runs against Trembath. The New Zealander is in very good form, and we would certainly have, seen something quite exciting could the same be said of Taylor. In the 350 yards event Tremhath went out to “ bake ” Taylor bv making the pace hot all the way. Taylor lot Trembath got a lead of aloout six yards, but. when he made an effort to reduce the lead ho did not have tin strength, and ho fell 20 yards from the t.a- e. The time was In no way sensational. tOcr having been taken for the trip. The 500 yards run was merely a canter. Trembath, satisfied that he had Tavlor’s measure, just simply allowed the latter to trot along in front until 50 yards from the tape, when he went to the front and won easily. The time (V7sec —very slow. Tavlor is a most unfortunate runner. When he was matched n gainst Donaldson. Tlolwav, and Postle. on the Agricultural Ground, he contracted brvondhitis, and was unable to show anything near his form. Just, as he again strikes form he has the misfortune to get dengue fever, which will keep him back for several weeks at least.
