(Feom Our Owk Correspondent l January 6. Mr J. E. Henrys was at the Wairaraipa meeting on Saturday and -U-onday, and got to Oamaru on Tuesday night —a smart bit of travelling. Your correspondent attended the Taranaki and Marttai meetings. MV A. Vincent, for some time assistant to Mr C. O’Connor, officuo t-od at the Wairarapa meeting, and created a favourable impress ion. Mr A. C. Alois? (cart taker at TLawer-a), brother to the well-known handicapper, acted at Marton, and was complimented by the stewards. The form of the winners at Taranaki and Ma.uawatu worked out well at .Stratford, Hawke’s Bay, Wairara ( pa. and Marton. After winning the Islington Plate at Ellersbe. Equitas was put on the train on Friday, ad reached Me i-fon on Saturday. She tan third in the Marton Cun, and

Pritchard rode three of thorn, and also scored on Blue Lake and Beacon. The Opaki-trained Sir Knox (named after has trainer, R. Knox) won the Wairarapa Oup from the two top-weights, Undecided and Merri- ; vonia. Si r Knox is by imported Sir Laddo from a daughter of St. Leger, who has produced a number of useful winners: in the I Wa-inarapa district. Gaelic and Curenagh wore two of thorn. On the second day Undecided sectored, Merrivonia and Sir Knox being unplaced. The latter ran two good races the same day at Maderton a week previously. The Masterton-owned Ladino (Sir Laddo —Windlass) beat a big field in the Maiden. Simipas was favourite for the Tuhitarata Handicap, but was beaten by another three-year-old in Khamsin (Quarryman —Mist), a half-sister to that great performer Vladimir. Khamsin had won earlier in the season ait Feilding. She is owned bv the local sport who races as Mr Lance Wood. The Blenheim-owned Boaoon (Euroclvdon —Guidin- Step) boat a good field in. the Ruamaihanga Hack Handicap, five furlongs. Mr W. E. Bid will (president of the Club, won the Juvenile Handicap eight furlongs, with Imagination (Birkenhead — Culmination). Peroneal (Achilles —Prelude), who ran second, won on the following day, when the Bidwill stable was represented bv Submersion (Birkenhead —Immersion). W. H. M‘Kay, formerly connected with S. Messana's stable, and now follows the ocera- > pat ion of farmer in the Masterton district, scored on Long step (Stepniak—Good Intent) in the RueseLl Handicap, six furlongs, and on Daunton (Sensation —Miss Daunt) in the Pirinoa Hack Handicap, six furlongs. 'Merrivonia’s half-sister, Lady Kilcheran (by Kikberisin) won the Pukio Unck Handicap, six furlongs. Bally Shannon (who deadheated with Eclogue at Ma-sterton) was allowed to .pay a good price in the Reynolds Handicap, seven furlongs. Naumai (the Feilding Stakes winner) was produced in the Rauiri Handicap, five furlongs, but the going did not suit him, and ho failed to got a place. Blue Lake (Royal Fusilier — Blue River) won from Lady Kilcheran. On (the concluding day of the Manawatu meeting (December 29) Queen of Scots ‘(Robin Adair —Queenaborough) scored her second win in the Whitmore Hack Handicap, one mile. Robin Adair is a son of Robinson Onißoe, and Qucemsborough is a daughter of KingSborough, whose best advertisement was Dan O'Brien’s R-übina (dam of Florrie, Laoi races ton, etc'. W. D. Young (a younger brother to W. and R. Young) won the T© Mata Hurdles on Te Whetu (Day Star —Mercia), a stable mate of Ruenac, a winner at Elierslic. Both are trained by A. Atwood at Feilding. Cork (Merriwee— Float) scored in the Cl a n do boy e Welter, seven furlongs. The Gisborne-owned and A w-apuni-trained Birkline (Birkenhead — Agony) got home in the Presidents’ Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, from Goodwin Park and Voetgang. Birkline is owned by Mr Cuthbcnt Morse (who owned Te Aral). Lucy (also owned in Gisborne) was sent out favourite, but ran last. She carried 8.3. Later in the afternoon she carried 8.13. and won the Farewell Handicap, one mile. There was a hostile demonstration, but a p rot cert lodged was dismissed. In both her races Incy was ridden by W. Young, who has been a good deal in the limelight this season at Riccarton, Feilding, and Master ton. The presence of u stipendiary steward was badly needed at the Manawatu meeting. The Higbden stable scored a win with Blakeney (Soult-Inamo-rata) in the •Christmas Hack Welter, seven furlongs. Blakeney is a full brother to Xey and Ohauveli.n. who have bwn racing in Auftra 1 ia, the la-t couple of ecasonS. Mr “ Higbden ” is president of the Mana-w-atu Club. Air D. Buick, M.P., patron of the club, scored a win in the Kaavau Handicap, six furlongs, with Rmgiatua (Papakura —Elusion). W. Young rode Blakeney, and alro scored on Gay Lawless (Lethe — Capuaine) in the Wcstbufry Hack Handicap, five furlongs. The latter is a stable mate of Birkline. Formerly, the Wanganui and Manawatu sports mot at Rangitikei at New Year time, but this time they forgathered at Alar ton, 1 which is only nine miles away from Bulls Most of the Rangitikei stewards were present, and it is hoped that next New Year the meeting will be at Bulls. On the first day the sum of £15,000 was put through the machine; on the second day tne i weather was wet and boisterous, but the meeting was run through, and, under the circumstances, the amount put through (£10; 000) must be considered very saticfac-
tory. Birkline was only seen out in th* Alarcon Cup. which he won in good stye from Goodwin Park (runner-up on the third day at Manawatu) and Eqmt«s. i-iilta (wno has improved with the two races ho heed at Taranaki the previous week) Avon the Hurdles each day. and is going to be pretty good at the business. Ho is a half-brother to Maharanui, and the double winner was Projectile (Torpedo —Cornelian), OAvned by the Marion trainer T. Lloyd. The opposition he met Avas very poor. Matlow (Captain Webb —Lady Gavcu) also Avon a race each day. KingsAvell (Kilcheran —La Goria) aaoh tho Trial Hack Race on the opening day. Two smart gallopers won the Scurry Races. Muorc (Maniapoto—Kohina) won on the opening day. The two races ah© had at sharpened her up. Handsome Maid, who Avon on the second day, is byHand so mo Jack—Remuem, and is full sister to Allner, a Avinner at • Taranaki and Stratford. Mr W. F. Beth, who rs • contly .returned 'from Australia,, owned both horses, and Avas present at Marten. Fashion Plate (Handsome Jack—Rongotea) put down a good favourite in Mukara oil the second day. Scallneii played up tho post in the Welter on the first- <|ay v and got left spa- era} lengths. Eclogue, held under lease by the Feilding trainer J. Cameron. won from Attention. On the first day F. Meagher rode four winners in succession, | and horses trained by F. Tilley finished ; fiycy times second and once third. T. O Neill Avon the Electric Hack, five furlongs. with Monologue (AdA'ance —Epilogue), Gay Lawless being a o-ood .second, i The big race on the second day went to Patriotic (Patronus —Pauline), ~ a halfbrother to Pauline, in the same stable. Bronze. \vho ran second, shaped (better Avith Meagher up than when ridden by W. Young the previous day. Tho latter scored on Matlow and Sea Queen, who 1 Avas placed in tho five races she contested I during the holidays. Last week, in reA-ievring the Manawatu meeting, your correspondent mentioned Tripoli, Avho was owned by Mr C. O’Donoghtto. Tripoili Avon again at Hasting Avhen his owner Avas proprietor of an hotel. Tho following daA' Mr O’Donoghue died after a short illness. Ho was a genialhearted Irishman, A-ery fond of a racehorse. especially a jumper, and made many friends and few enemies
