The Gore District Defence Association opened the ninth annual meeting on the Gore range on the Ist under [avourab.o weather conditions. , . , The shooting opened with a fairly iugn standard, and the position was close and interesting throughout the day. . The entries totalled 63, as compared with 65 last year, and this may perhaps be accounted for by the fact that the rifles of some of the mounted men have been called in and some of the companies having been formed into batteries. The Gore District Rifle Association concluded its ninth annual meeting on the . Gore range on Tuesday. The weather was all that could bo desired, and there was no wind to speak of. From the scores it will be seen that the shooting all round was good. On tho whole the gathering was a most successful one, and the officials deserve a word of praise or their energetic work. Private Paget commenced with a pair of bull's-eyes, but his third shot was a magpie. lie soon recovered his position on the target, however, and put in throe bulls in succession, then three inners, finishing up with a bull and a score of 45 out of a possible 50. Rifleman Wright started -with a bull’s-eye and a magpie, then put on four bull in succession, nn inner, and two bulls. His last shot—an inner—was watched with extraordinary interest, for had it been a bull Wright would have tied with Paget for tire championship. Corporal M’Kenzio shot very well, securing six bull's-eyes and four inners. Rifleman Black made the best ' score at the range, putting in seven bull’seyes, then a couple of inners, and finishing un with a, bull’s-eye and a total of 48. Sergeant Munro put up five bull’s-eyes, four inners, and a magpie. Bandsman Dickson secured six bull’s-eyes, two inners. and two magpies. Private Miller scored three inners, one outer, an inner, four bulls, and an inner. | TEAMS’ MATCH. Five men aside; seven shots at 300, 500, j and 690 yards. Gore Rifle Club.
OTHER TROPHIES. Private Paget won Captain Stevenson’s ' trophy for the best aggregate in the Gore, Attack, Clinton. Rivorsdale, and Tapamu Matches, including handicaps of not more than 8 points; score 140. Lieutenant Colc|uhoun and Private Moore, of the Tapanui Chib, tied for Mr M’Ara’s trophy for the best aggregate in the same matches, using 8 points or more of handicaps; ecoi es 120 each.
