NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATIONS TO I! HX AM ENT. Sixth Day.—Tuesday. The amnual bowling tournament of rhe Now Zealand Bowling Association was continued on the 2nd. It may be mentioned that at 11.30 in the morning the Dunedin Green was a-quarter of an inch under water, but so well drained is the green that it was playable by half-past 2. For the foot two games the green was very heavy, but after that it improved with every bead until, wnen play concluded, somewhere in the vicinity of 9 o’clock, the various rinks were in good order. Fine weather prevailed on the 3rd until shortly before 6 o’clock, when heavy rain fell,-making the greens quite unplayable. Owing to the delay caused by the rain during the course of the tournament a number of players had had to leave for their homes in different parts of the Dominion, so that wins by default were numerous. At the Valley, for instance, only 19 players out of 32 put in an appearance. Ae a result, the play on several greens was rapidly advanced. The following were the winners on the respective greens: Dunedin - MTlwrick, with Christie runner-up. Kaituna —Bentley, with Stoneham upSt. Kilda—Smith, with Wallace upRoslyn—Baillie, with Rawlinson runnerup. N.E. Valley—T. Edwards (Temuka), with M'Curdy runner-up. DUNEDIN GREEN. C Rinks. COMPLIMENTARY SPEECHES. After play had been suspended on the ' Dunedin Green, the bowlers assembled in the club’s pavilion Mr C. Russell Smith (chairman of the Dunedin Centre) said it had been intended to present the prizes at the close of the rink matches, but unfortunately they had not reacted that position. He wished to take that opportunity, of saying how deeply indebted they all wore to the various cluba for the cheerful manner in which they had given the use of their greens.—(Applause.) Ho specially thanked the Dunedin Club for the very generous manner in which it liad treated the Tournament Committee. —(Applause.) If it had not been for the nelp of the Dunedin Club the tournament would not have reached its present stage. Mr Taylor, the caretaker, had done all he could to assist, and the committee felt grateful to him for what he had done, —(Applause.) They were also indebted to the secretaries of clubs, to the ladies, and to the press.— (Applause.) He called on Mr I-onguet to say a few words.
Mr C. S. Longuet (Invercargill), president of the New Zealand Bowling- Association, expressed his thanks for the manner in wihich the .Dunedin Centre had cooperated with the association in the conduct of the" tournament. The woctheaf conditions had been bad, but, as players, they had this satisfaction, that the weather in Dunedin hud been no worse than elsewhere in the Dominion. The adverse conditions had been received by bowlers in the true bowlers’ spirit, and, that being to, the tournament had been a success. Mr Longuet in conclusion thanked the officers oi the association for the many courtesies that had been extended to him, both by the officials of the association and also by the respective clubs,! on whose greens the tournament hud been conducted. On the call of a prominent tournament bowler cheers, with musical honours, wore given for Mr W. H. Hogg, who throughout acted as assistant secretary. t Cheers were also given, on the call of Mr C. Payne, for the president of tLe Dunedin Centro (Mr C. Russell Smith) Eighth Day —Thursday. CONCLUSION OF PLAY. The concluding games in tho New Zealand Bowling Association’s 1911-1912 tourna' ment wore played on tho Dunedin Green on the 4th, when all events excepting tha champion rinks were brought to finality. Tho tournament, like all other Now Yea* fixtures throughout Now Zealand, has suffered an interference on account of weather, but, all things taken into consideration, the engagement has been carried 1 through in a manner that reflects credit on the Executive Committee and the a-eociation’s officers, both' paid and otherwise. The catering on the various greens was a credit to the clubs and their lady friends, on whom tho whole burden of providing afternoon tea fell. Players and spectator# were at all times regaled with refreshment, and the ladies throughout wore* most assiduous in their attention to the wants of tho green patrons. Throughout the tournament there was at no time any friction, and local and visiting players unite in saying that tho esprit de corns cornnared more than favourably with that at the majority of such contests in which they were engaged. CONCLUDING DAY. Tho South Otago Centre’s annual bowling tournament was brought to a successful conclusion at Balclutha on the 3rd inst. The weather broke exceedingly fine, and continued so until play was concluded. The green played -well throughout. The day’s play commenced about half-past 9. The morning was taken up with the playing off of the finals in the Rinks Match, while in the Doubles Match one round was played, giving the winners of tho third prize, the game to decide the winners of til® first and second prizes being decided in the afternoon. The arrangements in connection with the tournament were in the hands of un energetic executive. Mr J. G. Henderson (Stirling) filled the responsible and onerous position of secretary, and to his energies and enthusiasm tho successful issue to which the tournament was conducted was in a largo measure due. For information at all tunes readily and courteously supplied by Mr Henderson and by Mr Jjimes Esson (of Stirling) the thanks of our representative arc duo. The following are the results of yesterday’s play : DOUBLES MATCH. The game between Sheddan and Ramsay (Balclutha) and W. Boyd and Murray (Balclutha) to decide the winner of Balclutha Green was played on Tuesday evening, and resulted in a win for Sheddan and Ramsay, the scores being 20---12. Finals. First Round. Dunne and Ramsay (Balclutha) 23 beat Prvde and Shaw (Kaitangata) 17. Inglis and Esson (Stirling), a bye. Second Round.
Uunno and Ramsay (Balclutha) 16 beat Inglis and Esson (Stirling) 12. In the game between Dunne and Ramgay and I’rvde and Shaw the losers were to"take third prize and the winners to play off with luglis and Esson for first and second places. Dunne played with Ramsay as a substitute for Sheddan. who, owing to a call of business, was unable to take part in the game. The opening head gave a single to Shaw. The next favoured Ramsay to the same extent, and the Balclutha pair netted no fewer than five on the third head by a succession of good drawing shots which Shaw failed badly to shift. From this stage to the eleventh bead the scoring favoured Ramsay, who secured three two’s and a three. Shaw getting throe singles and a two. The scoring was then 15 —6 in favour of Ramsay. The twelfth head was a Very interesting one, Shaw getting the shot from a firm draw with his last bowl, the kitty being lo.y than a foot from the ditch. At the thirteenth end Ramsay ran the bowls and Shaw lay three. With his last bowl the Kaitangata skip added another, and, Ramsay failing to do anything with his final bowl, Shaw netted four from the head. At the fifteenth end a single Went to Ramsay, and the score was p7_Zn. At the sixteenth end Ramsay wa« lying two and Shaw played his last bowd to save, but to no purpose. At the succeeding end Ramsay had the shot. Shaw had two seconds, and with his last bowl sent down a firm draw and shifted the shot-ball, netting one off tho end. Fry do and Shaw secured three from the eighteenth head, and wero then four clown. At the nineteenth eml Ramsay lay shot and then drew another. A fast bowl by Shaw disturbed the position, and the Kaitangata pair lay two. Ramsay cut one out with his last, bowl, and Kaitangata netted a single and were three down. On the twentieth head Kaitangata added another single and were two down. On the last head Balclutha wero lying two and Pry do drove, leaving them one, with tho kitty an inch from the ditch. With hia last bowl Ramsay got shot and lay three. Shaw was playing too hard, and hi« bowls
were running into the ditch. On the other hand Ramsay showed fine drawing ability, and netted four out of a difficult head. The game thus finished with the scores 23—17 in favour of Dunne and Rameay. Pryde and Shaw thus filled third place and Dunna and Ramsay were left to play off with Inglis and Esson for first and second prizes. The game between Inglis and Esson (Stirling) and Dunne and Ramsay (Balclutha) to decide the winners of first and second prizes opened evenly. At the fourth head each pair had scored two singles. On the fifth end Esson was lying two. Ramsay drove and scattered tire bowls, and Lay one, Essotn failing to alter the position with Ins I last bowl. Inglis sent down two splendid ! shots at the sixth end and lay two, Ramsay | driving twice to shift them, but without result. With his next he cut, out Esson s I third shot bowl, and then Esson narrowly escaped spoiling his own position with his last bowl. The head gave two to the Stirling pair. Dunne drew shot with a splendid bowl at the next end, but Esson disturbed t he position and lay one. With the next bowl, however, ho was unfortunate enough to cut his own bowl out. and Balclutha lay three. Ho made amends by drawing shot with Ida last, but Ramsay cut him out with his final howl and scored four off the head. With seven heads gone, the scores were; Ramsay 7, Essan 4. Dirmio drew shot at the eighth end, and Es«on drove twice to disturb tlio position, but Xai’cd, and a single went to Ramsay, making him four up. At the next end Ramsay added another single, a drive by Esson having no effect. At the tenth end Balclutha lay three, and Esson bumped another up, giving his opponents four. Ho saved one with his next bowl, and almost got shot with his seoood-last, a single going to Ramsay. Scores: Ramsay 10, Eason 4. Inglia drew shot at the eleventh end, and Esson added two more. Raratiay drove fo save, but without effect, and the Stirling pair scored three, making them three down. The next head favoured Stirling until Dunne shifted the kitty. Esson sent down some fine drawing shots, and was lying two or throe, when Ramsay trailed the kitty into the ditch. Esson saved by a good drawing shot, and netted one, and was then two down. On the thirteenth end Ramsay got a single off a wick. Ramsay lay shot at “the next, end, until Essoin displaced him. Ramsay followed by trailing the kitty and getting shot, Esson just missing the jack with his last bowl. With 14 ends gone Ramsay was four up. A single wont to Ramsay at the fifteenth end. The opening of the next head easily favoured the Balclutha pair, who placed two bowls round the kitty. Esson cut one out, and another single was added to Ramsay’s total. Esson got two off the seventeenth end, and was then four down, the scores being 14 —10. Ho added a single on the eighteenth end, and was throe down. At the nineteenth end Ramsay lay two. The position was an exceedingly difficult one, but Esson was equal to the occasion, and, turning one of his bowls in. Jay shot. With two heads to go the scoree were 14 —12 in favour of Ramsay. The last head but one revealed some excellent play. Ramsay’s drawing was too much for_ Esson, and a single went to Balclutha. With the last head to go the scores wore 15 —12 in favour of Ramsay, and it did not look as if Escon could make up the deficiency. Ramsay lay three and Esson cut out two, leaving Balclutha with one.' The game thus finished with the scores 16 —12 in favour of Dunne and Ramsay, giving them find place in the pairs match, Inglis and Esoon filling second place. Rises Match. Einals. Kaitanguta (J. Kyle, W. M‘D jugall, R. Carson, J. Gage) 18 beat Kaitangata (W. Duncan, W. Smith, A. Blackie, J. Rutherford) 17. j Balclutha (Cross, A. N. Hislop, A. E. I Bragg, aud (Juft) 20 b&at Kaitangata. (Myers, Sliarp, Clements, and Bissett) 9. The game between Kaitanguta (Gage) and Kaitangata (Rutherford) to decide the winner of the first and second prizes in the Rinks Match provided some very in- | terceting play and an exciting finish, j Rutherford netted a single from the openI ing head, and Gage followed with a single I and a 2. Rutherford secured 3 from the I fourth head, ana the same number from ! the sixth end, the fifth end providing three ! for Gage. At the tenth end the scoring j was 10-9 in favour of Gage, and from I this stage to the seventeenth head the soori ing was small. Gage’s rink scored at j most of the ends, and were then. 3 up. Rutherford secured a single from the eighteenth head, and was then only two J down. By sound drawing play, ho obi tamed two further points at the succeeding end, and thus drew level with Lis opponent, the scores being 16 all. On the sioond last head Gage’s rink were lying I one when the skips went down to play. ! Rutherford’s first bowl was too strong, and I Gage pul in another shot with his second , bowl. Rutherford displaced him with his last bowl, and lay shot. Gage’s final bowl : went wide, and a single was added to i Rutherford's score, making him 1 up, the I score being 17 —16. On tlie twenty-lirat and ; last bead Gage’s rink were lying 2 at an ; early stage, when Blackie drove and burnt | the head. On replaying it Gage again : lay shot, and Rutherford failed to tasiurb j it with his last bowl. Gage still had a i bowl, and with it the opportunity to put in another shot and wm, but his bowl j went wide, and he netted but a single, i r i lie scores were then 17 all, and an extra | head was played. Carson, by knocking j on an opponent’s howl, lay shot, but Blackie shifted it in turn, and when the i skips went down Rutherford's rink lay I. j Gage sent down a fast bowl and changed | the position to his own advantage to the i extent of one bowl. Rutherford drove with ' his last bowl, but went wide, and the 1 game finished with Gage 1 up, the final scores being 18—17. This gave Gage's rink first place in the Rinks match, second : place going to Rutherford’s rink, j * ’file game between Balclutha (Cuff) and | Kaitangata (Bisset) to decide the winner of the third prize, was too one-sided to i be interesting. In Cuff's rink A. K. Bragg 1 took the place of T. Carson. Balclutha secured 2 from the opening head and a I single on the third head. Three singles I went to Kaitanguta, and at the fifdi end ! the score was 3 all. Cuff secured the suci ceeding four heads, and Kaitangata the i next, the score then being 7—4 in favour i of Balclutha. Excepting for two singles i which went to Kaitangata, Cuff’s team did I all the scoring up to the nineteenth end. ! Their uniformly. good play proved too i much for the Kaitangata men, and at the I nineteenth end they were no fewer than i 14 up. On tlve last two ends a two and a single went to Kaitangata, and the game ! finished with the scores 20 —9 in favour of Balclutha. Cuff’s rink played remarkably well together considering the 'fact that they were selected at random. In fact, in
the early stages of play this rink was looked upon as somewhat of a “scratch’ one. By winning their game against Kaitungata. Cuff’s rink secured third prize.
