WALLIS ISLAND

SYDNEY, January 3. Dr Borchard, French resident at Wallis Island, bae returned from a visit to France, where he went to consult the Colonial Minister in reference to the trouble which has for a long time existed between the Resident and' the Marist Brothers at the island mission. Dr Borchard obtained authority to break the alleged overruling powers of the priests, and returns armed with special instructions from the Minister to deal with the situation. Dr Borchard, however, declines to disclose the nature of his instructions. January 5. The Rev. Father Chevreuil, procurator to the Marist Mission overseas, denies M. Borchard’s allegations against the priests on Wallis Island, which he declares are a libel on the missions. Ho asserts that M. Borchard is afflicted with anti-religious monomania, and is going beyond his powers, which are restricted to external affairs. January 6. M. Borchard reiterates his statement, and declares that he is returning to Wallis Island to take certain action in which he will be supported by the French Government. Ho denies the repifC M Si* mission newspaper that he held the hand of the King, and compelled him to sign a decree expelling Father Bazin from the Island.
