WAITAHUNA SHOW.
The Waitahuna Farmers’ Club was favoured -with a warm, dry day for its ihirty-first annual show, held on the club’s grounds at Waitahuna on Dec. 27 Though the clouds grew threatening lute in the afternoon, and a strong wind sprang up, the rain held off till the close. The Vfaiiahuna Brass Band was in attendance, and under the conductorship of Mr G. B. Laidlaw, discoursed bright and lively music at Intervals during the afternoon. The attendance was good, there being 600 or 700 l£k>plo on tho ground, though tho gate tnoney, ever £2l, was about £2 behind year’s takings. Mr James Alien, -P.. was among the visitors to the ■grounds. The- Society for tho Prevention bf Cruelty to Animals was represented by fts Inspector (Mr J. Craig), who found alt Jjic arrangements for stock quite satisfactory. A refreshment booth was largely patronised from lunch time onwards, and proved a great convenience to many. The
judging of the horses occupied a very long time, and as a result, the riding and jumping competitions, in which most popular interest centres, could not be commenced till after half-past 5. The results could not be obtained before the train left. „ Numerically, the entries as a whole were slightly better than those of last year, the figures being 237 and 223 respectively. The improvement was most marked in the draught horse and sheep classes, but there was a considerable decrease in the number of cattle and in the dairy produce entries. The display of cheep was a good one, particularly in crossbreds, and compared well with that seen at similar shows elsewhere. The first prize Leicester owe was very true to l>pe, though it was not particularly well-prepared for exhibition. The winning hoggets were both good and well brought out. The Romney ewes, though not in the best condition, were fine animals, and showed good breeding. The first and second freezing lambs were also particularly good. The bigger lambs were not in condition, and the smaller ones won on their superior quality. Among the horses the eight dry mares were a particularly fine lot, and mad© the best ring of the day. The three horse teams were a good class, and indeed all the team competitions brought out animals of a sound, useful stamp. Among the light horses, the best competition took place among the lighter weightcarrying hacks, and for the prize presented for the best style of rider to pace, walk, trot, and canter. The only other important section of the show was that included under the heading dairy produce and homo industries. In th© butter sections particularly the quality reached a high standard, and competition was keen. In the cattle, dog. and poultry sections, which made up the remainder of the show, the entries wore small, and but little interest was taken in the results. A largo share of tho credit for the organisation of the show is duo to the secretary (Mr R. Murray), m whom the pressmen aro also indebted 'or kindly assistance.
