TUAPEKA SHOW.
The fifteenth annual show of the Tuapeka Agricultural Society was held on the Lawrence recreation reserve on Dec. 22. The day was bright and very warm, though there was a strong wind blowing across the ground. For the last three years show-day in Lawrence has been marred by rain, and the pleasant chango on Show Day was welcomed by large numbers, both from the township and the surrounding country. • The grounds must have been visited by well over a thousand people during the course of the afternoon, and the attendance probably constitutes a record for the society. 7 here is no doubt that a refreshment booth would have done good business, particularly in soft drinks, but it seemed that no one could be found to take charge of such a stall, and so there was none on the ground. Taking the show as a whole there was a very marked improvement, not only in the number of the entries, but in the quality of the animals exhibited. The entries increased in number as compared with last year from 103 to about 170. The improvement was an all-round one, but it was specially marked in tiro draught-horse classes, in which 46 animals came forward where there were but 15 last year. The dry mares were spoken of by the judges as exceptionally good, and this was. also true of the aged geldings, and the prize-takers in this latter class might have been exhibited with confidence at almost any show. The pairs showed fine quality, and the younger classes, though not numerically strong, wore of good character, and made a most promising lot. The cattle exhibited were chiefly shorthorns and crossbreds, of which there were some good types. The sheep made a very fair class for a country show, the competition, however, being confined to Border Leicester and crossbred classes. Seats for visitors were provided all round the roped enclosure, and the prettily situated reserve was looking its very best. Among those present were Mr James Allen, M.P., and Mr J. Craig, who was representing the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A number of most interesting riding, jumping, and walking competitions for horses were hold late in the afternoon, and the judging of the light horses was not commenced till 4 o’clock, just about the time the train left, and consequently those results are not included below. Our reporter is indebted to the secretary, Mr J. C. Browne, and particularly to his assistant, Mr Percy Browne, for courteous help in obtaining information promptly.
